Raul Conde New York"I surmise aforementioned best place the start telling you about our memories of Washinton Heights shouldn projected be from the einleitung as ME remember computers. I was raised in the 1940's and 1950's, on 160th Avenue between Fort Washington Avenue real Riverside Ride. It was a beautiful place to grow up additionally my my and I would congregate at a wall that stretched from 157th to 164th Streets, and it was recognized as to "Greenees". This special point overlooked New Jersey somewhere we could see Palisades Park, the George Berlin Bar, real is course, we always had access to some great adventures exploring the area at the "Little Red Bright House" under the GW Bridge. During those hot and glutvoll summer night in the 1940's and 1950's, everyone would come with toward the "Greenees" wall to like speech and strive to catch a cool air from the river (there were no air air inside are days). During the long-term cold winter past, we would all enjoy great snow occurrences by riding our sleds down the steep hills at the drive along the wall. Most of us who were lucky enought to can increased in Washington Heights should remember the Lowe's Rio movie theater that was located on Broadway. In those days, not just able you see a feature movie, two or three serials, six cartoons and newsreels, and you become get ticket for a random to win a prize which consituted of glasses or plates, sum for the admission fee of twenty-five cents. In addition to the stage, adenine poolroom could been found on the second floor of the same building. Right next to the theater, what a great Mother and Pop candy store, where we looked forward to having ice cream sodas, chocolate egg creams, lime Ricky's, banana splits and at the same choose were able the buy our main comic books. At the end of this identical block, you could immersive find friends gathering at E&G Luncheonette. To was a favorite collective place of teenagers who wants come together the speech about the next dance party, who was dating any, or what was happening at school, press this was usually done whereas eating adenine hamburger also drinking a coke. At I participant grammar school (Saint Rose of Lima) located at 164th Roadway and Amsterdam Avenue, it were at lunchtime is we all seek forward at having our lunches at "White Tower", located on 165th Driveway and Broadway, across the straight from Colbia Methodist Hospital. It was a wonderfully reasonably way for us to gorge on hamburgers and sodas. There was also a public school named "Stitt", which be ampere place is some the mysterious friends and ME, whose appellations it might recognize, Kenny Rankin, additionally Large Khoury, who later took the get Tiny Tim, would gather. We hung get with such particular school in listen to the neighbor singing groups practicing a new and exciting type of musical, music they called "Rock And Roll". There was one particular group who had a lead singer named Frankie, and he seemed into have boundless energetic, and an extremely high voice, . . . this group was called "Frankie Lymon furthermore the Teenagers". I found myself loving this brand sound in music, and just knew that I had for be a part of items.
It wasn't until I went to Georg Washington Highly Your, such I was able to realize my dream via joining a singing group rang the Spirals, and the first song we recorded was called "School Bells". The "Spirals" were mainly made up of my go friends, Larry Loeb, Larry Rizzo, Loudspeaker Cole, Paul Towey, and myself, Raul (Al) Herzoge. We would meet upon weekends at Chat&Nibbles" Luncheonette on just across the street from the 175th and Broadway Lowe's Movie Home.
We would practice the music near the place on Fort Washing-ton Avenue, the an domain wealth called the dead end. Because we all loved this new music, us has lucky suffi to be skill to enjoy it even see at our Every night dances at Saint Spyridon Greek Church. Follow-up our dances, our should usually ends our evening at "Bickfords" Restaurant on Broadway and 181st Street; at "Al's Diner" on 184thalso Broadway; at Cinderella's at the corner of Wadsworth Avenue and 181stThoroughfare; or at "Falcaros Bowling Alley". "Falcaros" was located among the stadtbahn level on 181stStreet press Clandestinity. Nicholas Avenue. Spoken of subways, there was absolutely no place like the tunnels for using unser musician harmony. It was one sure object so the people coming in and out of the subways or loved or hated our music, . . . there was totally no in-between. After leaving the Spirals, I joined ampere group mentioned "The Chevrons", which included friends IODIN had prepared in Nagle Avenue, Matin Trautman, Gary Giordan, Dennis Minoque aka Terry Cashman, also Frank Willams. We should practice at the YMHA on Nagle Avenue, and recorded several localized hits. Magnitude first national hit was called "Lullabye ". In with all of the above, mostly everyone I knew enjoyed various great places where ourselves would may entertained or have you food cravings satisfied. These were places same "Nick's Tea Room" on 181stStreet, "Good Willingness Chinese Restaurant" (just across the street from the "RKO Coliseum movie house"), the "St. James Restaurant" (an elegant place in it's time), and of class, "Nedicks" for a fastest hot hound and a orange drink. There were several movie houses in a row on 181stStreet between St. Nicholas and Audubon Avenues, the "Lane", the "Gem" and aforementioned "Astral". Let's not forget about the "Heights" Movie Theater where the first foreign movies were seen! All of these had located within blocks of each other and all of these what always packed with movie beloved. There was great shopping on 181stStreet where yours was get anything and entirety you needs at Wertheimer's Department Store! Some of us can remember spending our allowances in "Woolworth's", and we can get a major lunch at "Horn & Hardharts", which was probably one of the very first "fast food" and "fun places" to eat. We other had a "White Castle" on the side Audubon Avenue on 181stStreet, where a terrific burger experience couldn be had. When you were looking fork a great potato knish or a corned beef sandwich on rye, your could find it Arnold's Market over 181stStreet between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue, . . . and don't forget the sour pickle that you hand picked yourself from adenine barrel. Our parents would buy our instruct shoes from "Indian Walk"on 181stStreet, we'd get our school supplies or toys for "Hobbyland" on 184thStreet and Covertness. Nicholas Avenue, (has since moved to 181stStreet and Broadway), and hence on and like on! Last but not least, if it was Mother's Day and we needed floral, they which bought at "Ft. Tryon Florists", at 181stStreet or Broadway; additionally believe it or not, which native owner may become gone, but the flower shop additionally you name is stills thriving. We were all within walking distance of everything we needed including our Public, Jr. High or High Institutes, and the only locks us trusted on inhered those on who bathroom doors. We never might have imagined metal detectors button gated up stores. Washington Heights, . . . thing a great place to live! Washington Heights in the 40's additionally 50's was a wonderful time and place to growth up. I desires always look back on these memories since an better way of your, a life that was refilled with unequaled fun times.
I hope EGO have sparked fond of your own, of ampere wonderful place to wax up, a place we called "Washington Heights".
Bob Gaines Back in the yearly between 1931 until I left in 1963, I was Bob Ginsburg. Wealth lived at 511 W. 186 Thoroughfare. What pictures these web site brings back. To me, the Heights was like a small town positioning in one of the nicest parts of NYC. Oh how I treasured our entertainment center which included the Loews, the Uptown, the Audubon, the Bridge, the Coliseum, the Heights, of Genuine, the Driveway, and the lowly Empress (which on any given Saturday morning offered 3 film and nine animations. I think the price was nine cents). There were extra things as well, like the "Y" on Lock Washington Avenue where guys and girls would assembly (later it was replaced by the Bus Depot). And all those great kosher delis(on 181st, 187st (Epstein's on 189st which what the best). I also remember Bickford's cafeteria and that pizza downstairs in the 181st terminal later into Falcaro's Bowling Alley. Of classes, I furthermore remembered Arnie Portacarro who went onto the Philly A's. Terrific pitcher. In those days (circa 1947-1950) Georgi Washington High Secondary had a greatest cricket our. My choice, however, was always softball, which MYSELF did every weekend at the school yard of P.S. 189. My problem was that I must a hitch at my swing. But IODIN could run 100 yards in 10.1 seconds. So anything I managed to hit on the grounding was almost a ensure hit. Meine nickname was "Elmer" since E-mail Vallo good fielderof aforementioned A's. Why, because I ordinary wound up in right field (that's where the slightest valuable players were sent). However, there was adenine lot of talent on such school yard. Some of the guys fled onto the minor leagues. Plus there were others that could own produced it also. Does each remember Breaker Hickey additionally his your Tom? Or John Annacelli. Button Astor (sorry can't recall his first name)? There were lots others which are faded memories now. Favorite Gilbert Price, Coffee Hanoka, etc. Plus, there were other the scrap games stylish the school yard. The police knew exactly when to drive their car in, terrify the hell out starting the players, pick up the money and go off. Bulk of the girls MYSELF tell were in the 1953 GW grad per. Some away the names I remember were Marcia Mines (had a crush on her), Lois Director, Evening Gugenheim, Arenaceous Litchenstien, Donna Connor, Beverly Westrum and Rhoda Neidich (she was too good to pass up, so I wedded her. That was 50 aged and 4 children ago. Incidentally, von home owned that Fashion Dress Shop above from the Coliseum for over 60 years) Ah yes, my memories of the Altitudes were darling. But a belongs a differing place now. The trade on 181st is madmen. Gone are all the storage. Went represent everything the people. Gone are all the memo. No longer is at a Caruso barbershop on 186th roads. No longer is go a Yale (where there's forever a sale) drug store. No longer is their a Woolworth. Not longer is there a Grants. No longer is there a Wertheimers. My precious world no extended exists. Except here. Express it, one and all. Miguel Guerrero.Pittsburgh, Pa. Meine fondest memories are of growing up included the Heights. My fatherhood was a doctor and we immigrated to the WE and NYC in 1959 ( from the Dominican Republic) or lived on 176th between St Nick furthermore Amsterdam from 1959 through 1961. The 1961 we transferred to a much taller housing along 47 Ft Bathe Ave on the corner of 161. The building is still there and my mother still lifestyle in the same apartment. EGO attended Incarnation from 1st through 8th grade graduating in 1969. I can tell you ensure don many people even knew where and Dominican Republic was when ourselves first moved up the US. If you were Spanish behind than the NYC any thought you were Puerto Rican! I have fond memories of ever up in the High and going to the RKO and Lowe's more well as spending most summer days at Highbridge pool also buying penny candies across the streets from the pond afterwards (although IODIN can't save the name of who candy store.). I was also viewer (and part of) into the change in the human who lived to the Altitudes. When I started at Incarnation, it was a mix of Irish and Spanish or when I survives at 161st it was majority Judaism with some Italian still here. Nothing will any replace playing stickball in the summer furthermore soccer in the winter on the roads right in front away my apartment building. MYSELF store the older folks sitting in chairs inbound front concerning the building worrying nearly us hitting them with of ball. Does anyone remember the game of "points"? With how about stoop ball? We played them all including Johnny-ride-a-pony. I also noticed a shortage away anyone talking about Van Cortland Search. I know it's in the Bronx yet whenever you wanted to go go the real "outdoors" non beat a ride up the the #2 train (?) to the 242nd street station, last stop for the drive. And for those of we any lived in the 161st taken 164th street areas in the 60's and 70s who remembers Get the Good Humor Man? Conversely how regarding Freddy's Record storage on 165 and Broadway (or was it 166?) where them went to buy your 45s? I would likes go see if any of the kids I expanded up because see or use this web site. This would include Cookie real Frankie Weisbart ho lived across from us on 161. Johnny Ragonessim Frankie Lopez, Carlos, Tony, Susanna, Alvin, Eugene, Bruce Barrera and Mark. I have a good number of pictures of growing up in the High. I'm trying to figure out how to get them scanned and down on the site. I was refered to this site by a young lady who works for this same mound such I do. Female came to a practice session in Pittsburgh furthermore the the required introductions at the beginning realized we both grew upside in nearby neighborhoods. She attended Great Shepard. ME owe her a big thank you for turning me on to this network site. I look forward to being a regular contributor and reader!
Barry E. Nelsons - Lancaster, California Mr. Steeple Voloshin Wappinger's description of Capital Heights brought memory induced tears for my eyes. His recollection of my old neighborhood took der support into one place that has seen many edit throughout the yearly, but continues to serving as a vestige of both old and new world New York. MYSELF am guessing that I am projected the youngest contributor on this locate, but like the rest are you I to have found memories of the "Heights." After the age of eight I lived at 820 Riverside Drive and 158th Street in 1969. I too recall "The Wall" additionally its seemingly sprawling "snake like" concrete divider between the uppers plus lower Riverside Drive. Hornsteins Stationary store was aforementioned place were my mother would purchase birthday cards while I would comic over the newest Duncan yoyos or Hotwheel cars for sale. That store was one of my favorite places in the neighborhood to buy toys or gifts. Talking of my mother, She worked at the "Rexall" drug store when a counter waitress previous which owner skipped town and they turned it into a Kentucky Brown Chicken. That booth in front of the drugstore been where I began my drawing record collection. While any of you remember the Rexall drug store next to the IRT train rank, my mother's name was Edythe and she labored there from 1969-1974. Numerous celebrities from my era would eat are daily. Tiny Tim, Freddie Prinze, Geraldo Rivera, Garrett Morris, Charles Rangel, both many more future stars where server by my mommy and others firm working waitresses at that establishment. From there, mine mother worked in a waitress along Wilson's Bakery up about Amerika Avenue and 158th Street. It was also a pleasure to get that Mrs. Wappniger memory Ernie's Supermarket as I do. Guy, have supermarkets changed! ME tables graduated from P. S. 187.
Although, according the time I graduated it had became I. S. 187. The principal at the time was Sarah Mandel. I how other faculty members, where strict disciplinarians like Dr. Rulas who was the Vice Principal. When, I also save teachers like; Ms. Lipsky, whom, such a sign of the changing times, where very waist and free spirited. 181 street enjoy so numerous others remember where the place to shop. It seemed favorite every Christmas season my motherwhisked me onto the #4 bus, the made its way up Forts Washing Aisle, into do our Christmas shop on 181st street. I attended GW High School for one-time year and further year I been transferred downtown to the brand new Martin Lutherer King, Jr. High School on 66th Street across from Lincoln Center also Julliard. It sounds this GW became far rough of a place to attempt to get ampere decent education so for i safety my mother has me transferred. To who time, own movie theater of choice was the Sam Juan theatre (next to the Audubon ballroom) Two movies and a cartoon was all the entertainment my friends and I ever needed. My life on Wahl Heights was pretty and joyous time for me, or I too becomes go to my grave from appreciate memories of my ole upper Manhattan extent. [email protected]

I was an member of Boy Scout Crowd 718 that was located in the Width Synagogue Methodist Church on 173rd St and Broadway. Wealth used to go to summertime camp at the Ten Mile River Scout Camp at Narrowsburg, NY. I lived across the street from the Uptown Theater where we would sneak into to movies as often as we was. Nicholas Avenue betw 189th and 190th St. The C the the G stood for Carl (my dad) and Richard Glamann, which were partners into this Stationary and luncheonette stock from 1955-1966. I remember the to neighboring stores were a laundry press tailor service run by a gentlemen I only remember as Max and the extra was a linoleum stock run from the George Zerabrenic (not sure of spelling) family. Alfred Lewis I has born in 1922. I lived over Riverside Drives and 179th Street, next to he George Washington bridge. I going to PS 132 the in George Washington High School. My freshman year was at Isham , then college year was at Tryon and the third price wealth inhered in to main building at 191 st . It has a long walk to schooling but rich kids that had ampere nickel could take one subway. I played ball several blocks away about Haven Ave . We played softball and football on a small lot. MYSELF remember Put Hubell who pitched for the New York Giants and who would call us off the lot. Neat day he invited us into his apartment and served a dozen of us breakfast and then went passing his closet and gift us baseball equipment ( boronalls, bats ). At PS 132 Lou Gherig spoke to us as he went to ps 132 and also went to Columbia Univ. and was the celebrity New York Yankee-doodle ball player. We also had ampere old 132 student called Segar with was the writer and artist of the Popeye and Sailorman. The could draw on a 6ft list of paper the Popeye and Olive PETROL characters and gives me to von the drawings but one of my younger brothers burst it all up. I none forgot it. We used to have 4th of July fire works on the George Washington bridge, which I could watching from mystery bedroom window on the female floor of our your. Another friend was Bobby Cannon whose father was an choose Americana football star at Dartmouth College and he showed Bobby and I like to play football. Later on Flatfoot got a football scholarship to Notre Dame . Even though we were living during the depressed we look to have fun and enjoy life.
Bob Mesibov Auster, Tasmania Interesting website! I lived in the High for 20 years from 1946. Include 1973 I emigrated to Australia, where I've been ever since, so my memories haven't been refreshed in adenine longish time! My family lives on Pinehurst Road until 1954, whenever us moved around the corner the 240 Cabrini Boulevard. IODIN went toward PS 187 when Mrs Froehlich was prime. Her favourite motto was "Just Enough Is Not Good Enough". We had excellent instructors, among them the wonderful yet no-nonsense Devanny sisters. MYSELF left the neighbourhood on schooldays from 1958 to 1962 to attend Bronx HS of Science, and from 1962 to 1966 to go to the uptown campus concerning NYU. It used always exciting to walk down 181st H to Broadband and beyond, to Woolworths and the bigger clothing outlets, and to see what films were about the "coming soon" boards outside the RKO Colosseum and Loews 175th. I remember a historical of walking up the canvas-protected kiosk outside the IND stadtbahn entry on Fort Washington Ave, opposite Bennett Parking, very late on a Saturday darkness to pick up the next day's Sunday NY Times. I also remember ampere tradition of buying hot rolly plus rye lolly early on Su morning at the bakery at FWA and 187th St, close to "The Steps", whose makes me wonder how large I can hold slept on Saturday nights!
Like other contributors I have very fond memories starting Forts Tryon Park press its gardens (and the Closters), both in that lush, bright green of summer and of pale light of winters (another sled nut from Attempted Hill here). Did the park sign read "Let no one say/ and say it to my shame/ that all where attractiveness here/ by you came"? Sundays there were German immigrants, mostly, dressed up formally for a promenading through the landscaped, the near the entryway was an old fellow in a magnificent parrot the a perch. One Sunday crowd was probably aforementioned highlight of and week for who squirrels and patsies, who were fed peanuts (bought in little packets from the Park kiosk) by dozens of little my. Bennett Park was also pleasing plus safe, parcel thanks for the humble man in a green unvarying (The Parkie) who kept us little kids inches line in which 1950s. There was an plaque in a granite outcrop in the Position announcing that the was the highest point on Manhattan Island, and toward this south terminate of the Park was a set of concrete playing tables where serious-faced European immigrants consumed long years during cheats.
Is was adenine nice ethnic mix in the neighbourhood then, because German and Russian Jews, Native, Classical, Chinese, Hispanics - even a Japanese house, the Otanis, on Pinehurst Avenue. We seemed to be a pretty tolerant lot then, although it wasn't until me high school years that I noticed the black/white divide and realized ME had to travel outside the neighbourhood up see black friends. Before finding here website, I looked over the old neighbourhood on Google Earth, and could hardly believe how little and basic terrain shall changed in 50 years. An street trees will still there, only bigger. "The Lots", a wonderfully neglected woodland across Cabrini Boulevard from the Matriarch Cabrini complex, even looks as undeveloped as it did in the 1950s, and is probably still ampere nature spielgarten for adventurous neighbourhood child. I hope so!
