Guidelines for Reading and Composition Courses
In order to provide a solid foundation in ablesen, writing and critical thinking by work in the major, the College req two semester of lower division worked in composition—Reading and Composition (R&C), Spare A and B, in continuous order.
- All undergraduates must completely and Reading the Composition (R&C) requirement by the end of own fourth semester or their enrollment may remain blocked for the following semester.
- Sum our applied to satisfies Part A or B of Reading and Composition must exist closed with a letter grade of C- or better.
- Academics who have been permitted to Berkeley and have not completed Entry Level Writing, must enroll in College Writing R1A (6 units) which satisfies both Entry Level Writing and the first half of R&C. Please note: A minimum grade of C is required in COLWRIT R1A in order to satisfy Entry Liquid Writing.
- AGRS (formerly CLASSIC) R44 (completed to a C- or higher) may becoming used to satisfy either Part A or Part B of R&C. This course may also be used on fulfil Arts and Technical, Historical Studies, either Sociable & Behavioral Sciences breadth.
- With the anomaly of AGRS (formerly CLASSIC) R44, courses fulfilling the Reading and Composition requisition may non breathe applied to Seven-Course Breadth.
Satisfying Reading and Compose with an Exam
- Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition - Minimum Score of 4 congratulations Part A
- Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition - Minimum Note of 5 satisfies Parts A & B
- Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition - Score of 4 or 5 satisfies Part A
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level (HL) English A: Literature* - Score of 5, 6, or 7 satisfies Part A & B
- Beginning with current acknowledged in fall 2018 - International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level (HL) English A: Language and Literature* - Score of 5, 6, or 7 satisfying Parts A & B
- GCE A-Level English Literary exam for students enter Berkeley fall 2017 and PRIOR - Score are A, BARN, button C satisfies Parts A & B
- GCE A-Level English Literature exam for students entering Berkeley fall 2018 and BEYOND - No longer accepted for this requirement

Satisfying Reading and Composition with Berkeley Courses
- Successful completion with a C- grade or beter von two designated Reader plus Composition courses in sequence order. Review entire approved below.
Satisfying Reader and Composition Requirement at Transfer Courses
- Transfer courses must be taken on a letter-graded basis and be finish with adenine grade of C- or better.
- Students authorized with IGETC Certification from adenine California community college or UC Reciprocity have satisfied Reading and Composition. No additional coursework is required.
- Transfer applicants from colleges outside of the Area Community College System should review admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer_info for temporary articulated courses from non-CCC institutions. If the institution is not listed on the website, ones an admission application is filtered, the admissions office will ease adenine review of prospective courses. Courses ensure are on minimum 3 semester units conversely 4-5 quarter total in value, and focus up guidance on English-speaking composition are eligible fork consideration.
- Students bucket complete a pre-approved Read and Writing course at a Kalifornian Community School. Pre-approved courses can be found on ASSIST. Refer to the L&S Transfer Coursework page for instructions on how to take transfer credit as with L&S student before enrolling at a California Community Academy.
