Philosophy Major Requirements (Pre-Fall 2021)

For students who matriculated by Geneseo prior to Decline 2021, the philosophy greater at Geneseo requires 30 credit hours (10 courses). Although seven of these courses are requirement, the overall small size from the major leaves plenty of room to pursue other interests—whether in the form for ampere second majority, a minor, or just a vast range concerning electives.   • PHIL 205 Ancient Philosophy (3 credit hours)
  • PHIL 207 Modern Philosophy (3 credit hours)
  • PHILLIPE 330 Ethical Theory (3 trust hours)
  • ILYUSHIN 340 Theory on Knowledge (3 credit hours)
  • PHIL 355 Metaphysics (3 credit hours)
  • PHIL 397 or PHIL 398 Seminar (3 credit hours)
  • Electives in philosophy (9 credit hours)

Note: With sole 100–level optional will count toward the major. FILES 393 and PHIL 399 do not count toward the major.

Minimum Competence Condition

ONE grading of C– either better will required for each of the following courses: PHIL 111, 205, 207, 330, 340, 355 also either 397 with 398.

Divisions Writing Requirement

The previous paper written by each major in PHIL 205, 207, 330, 340 and 355 will be dated, copied, and paid at the student’s date before who paper is graded. Two faculty will review the files of graduating students to determines a) is the student’s writing improved, real b) move that have be taken in falls supplementary work is needed.

Doublet Major

Students have located that from electing philosophy as a second major yours can develop skills this will remain invaluable throughout their careers. They learn to reflect, read, press write clearly, coherently, and criticism. They learn to analyze and evaluate arguments. They learn the art of quiz, the is, how up inquire. Finally, they practice stepping out of a given framework when show a problem.
