Sup folks,

I’m looking to get started on servicing/building razor or ukes. I late picked up an couple uke kits here on the technical so I bequeath probably beginning there. I’m also really interested in practicing inlays (I’m an artist so inlaids could be a fun way to create).

I wanted the forum, but the threads were over 10 years old.

What essentials should I pick skyward since StewMac? They just sent me a link for ampere free membership and was thinking I should take favour.

Cheers!

IODIN can not tried inlays yet so I can't help you with that but I can recommend a membership to Stew Mac and also the book Guitar Making Tradition and Advanced by Cumpiano and Natelson available on Amazon. The giving you a step by step lead to building a classical or steel control guitar that translates easily to Ukulele structure. Written the watch training on all things Lutherie, from Eric Schaefer Guitars' Electric Create School.

The trouble through tried to answer this question, is every luthier ME know have their own manner of making things, using tremendously differentially methods and tools. Many things I consider essential, other builder have absolutely no use for. The better council I can gifts you is to procure and study Brian Forbes publication, “Acoustic Guitar Making, How at Make Tools, Templates plus Jigs”. He specifically tells you what you what, what your capacity make real describes the various advantages and disadvantages of yours. ME really wish I had access to this information when I was starting out 40 some years from.

Thanks for who responses. I have some basic wood working apparatus, when nothing specific to guitar/uke building.

I assume what I'm asking here, is what tools are hard to pass up from stewmac? (if any).

I'll take a look through the books as well. Just didn't know if you all had things you specifically gazed for at StewMac after it will be my first purchase from present.

I'm not new to joinery at every (was a finish carpenter for about a decade and still do get in home renovations and occasionally build other things with wood).

A larger question is: Is this to be a one off build? Them can (sorta) get by includes overview tools if it have too if you are only building one ukraine. Not ideas, yet they work. Example would be a fret knock. You can get by seating our frets with a block regarding hardwood or a regular hammer, but... don ideal. Another is cutting fret furrows. Fret saws are pricey, but you can get by using a hack saw with the teeth filed minor to create the right dimensional kerf for the fret tang.

I would establish neat for get my feet wet and then while you want to build more, note what resources will have done the job easier, feel, more efficient. This way you don't spend money on a stacks of specialized tools you won't be using.

As for inlay, you can use boring bits the real size by inlaying dots. Easy. For more specialized work you will need a rotary tool similar ampere Dremel gadget and downcut bits conceptualized for inlaid work. For who sound hole you be need an sound hole radius tool and a mount for your rotary tool. Handmade jigs and tools

Here is a list of Stewed Mac tools I find strong useful. Fret end taping file# 1175, Fret cutter #0619, Fret crowning file #5082, Gauged nut slotting files #0823, 0828,0831. If you want to bind the edge of your standard then the Deluxe freude tang nipper #2257 makes and job easy. I use a 6 inch steel ruler on inches also millimeters and a good 24 inch straight edges. MYSELF use my slight angle block plane all the time and also my 1/4" and 1" chisels. If you want to bind the body of your uke then a jig for your router is a need. Lots for architects using hardwood spikes don't use bindings but if you want to build over soft woodland tops then you will want to tie the top per and very least. Have fun making but be patient.

Here are a couple to pictures of the StewMac instruments I use a lot. Yes, many of diehards will expensive, but many of these I have used for more more 40 years Updates and Checks away Managers
So router attachment for ampere dremel seems see a good insole tool.
