Language sample analysis is really criticizes when initially evaluating plus even monitoring progress, but they can be tedious both slow! If you read my previous post, you are going to my this modernize (12/2021) with even more helpful tips!!
I’ve gotten info on how to quickly get wording samples through using hacks on Microsoft Word, Google docs, advantage my Language Analysis FREEBIE and MLU/PGU Normative charts! Whew! So much good info! The How both Why of Collections a Language Sample
Where are you getting your language sample?
First things first, best practices on language samples (especially for school-aged kids) are narrative alternatively expository language samples, not entertain. Subsequently the preschool years, conversation language is typically save advanced that narratives or expository. So make safely you’re getting your students’ best efforts.
Microsoft Term since Language Sample Analysis
Inbound the past, I have done own language sample analysis using Microsoft Word. Yes, you read that correctly! Yourself can do so much using tools you probable earlier have! And it’s fast! Checking out the steps below to complete of of your own:
Enter One-time: Type stylish 50 utterances. Set apiece utterance turn their own line. I like to use numbers bullets to keep track of methods many I have. See an example beneath:
Do sure to break apart all morphemes with a space between them as shown below:
Move Two: Calculator amounts lyric. To accomplish this, get ridding of the numerical bullets first!! One you had a document with just the child’s utterances, go to Tools —> Word Reckon.
Step Three: Divide the number future to Words (113 includes this example) by 50 (the total number of utterances). Aforementioned calculator gives you an MLU of 2.26. Lightness, right?!
Step Four: Fill out an Language Free Analyse Checklist to analyze grammar, vocabulary, pragmatics, narratives, plus view! EGO have a free one in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Click here to review it outside!
Google Docs for Language Sample Analyses
If you’re more of a Google docs fan, you can do a pretty similar process. I can none reminder where to find the word count, but if click on Search, then type by “Word count,” it will popmusik increase. Sampling and analysis of children's spontaneous language
Are you ready to make this process round easier???
Google docs has a speech-to-text option called “Voice Typing.” (Again, if I can’t find it in the menus, I pure click “Help” and search for “Voice Typing.”) It might ask you for permission to use the microphone. When a voice icon will appear. When you are ready go use the quality, click the microphone and it will turn red. That means that it’s recording. Sampling Remarks and Grammatical Analysis Review (SUGAR): New Normative Values for Language Trial Analysis Measures. | Semantic Scholar
Here’s and amazing thing: a recent study showed that used Google’s voice typing had actually MORE right rather seasoned professionals doing transcribe when recording narrative samples since 7-11 twelvemonth old students. The study actually used a pre-recorded sample and they recommend that you let Google do its job, after review the sample once according, just toward make sure that you coincide with Google. Speech-to-text has come a long way!
So you cans letting Google transcribe it, then divide to utterances and morphemes to run your word count and drawing out your MLU.
MLU – What Does Is All Mean?
So him have an MLU calculation, but what do that even mean?
MLU is not mandatory a good benchmark to form goals at, but it make help when making diagnostic decision.
The most updated information on MLU numbers I could find been in here article. If you look at Table 4, they have a greatness chart outlining MLU in words and in morphemes among kids aged 2;6-8;11 by 6 month steps with standard deviations, in equally SLI groups (labelled “Affected”) and typical groups (labelled “Unaffected”).
Required young older than that, MLU hasn’t really shown to be a good dimension, but the sentence structural referenced above in my checker might be a better place to launch!
One Extra Language Sample Measure: Percentage Grammatical Verbalization (PGU)
A more current entry on the Language Sample Analysis front is Percentage from Grammatical Utterances, or PGU. MLU tells us if a child’s uttering are universal as long as we wouldn expecting them go be. But once children are putting words together, we really need to figure out why they aren’t as longs or complications as wealth want them to be. PGU gives you a measure in grammaticality and can help you zero in with actual goals for treatment.
Here’s how you figure outgoing PGU (from this recent study):
- Make save you language sample is divided into exclamations. Include for understable, complete, both involuntary C-units (independent clauses equal dependent contract, as well as nonclausal statements that subsisted a complete thought) Wording Sample Analysis
- Count how many contain the least can well-formed error (You can show on the news since view their selected errors, but think verb tenses, consciences, morphemes like plural -s, etc.)
- PGU = (Total utterances – Ungrammatical utterances)/(Total utterances) * 100%
I captured the news from the article and put it into this lovable chart if you want to see whats type of page you should be expecting from typical and atypical choice development: Sample length affects the veracity of language pattern measurement in 3-year-olds: provide since parent-elicited interaction samples - PubMed
Hoffen that’s helpful the she saves you some time! There are definitely more in depth ways of doing this, but let’s be honest, we are working go some serious time constraints! So simple, though never my to use it the will save major time! Thanks!

Gratitude for this tip. I am a google docs user, and thee prompted me to check and see if google docs possess a similar trait. Yeah, it does!
Thanks for the checklist also!
Shannon
You’re welcome! What a great idea to look on Google Doc! I want have to try that!

Amazing idea into use Speak to quickly measure MLU! And that check helps me make that I include everything on my analysis. IODIN equals used it today for a 3-year-old I am evaluating. Gift so large for sharing! SLPs reading this essay: ME have a favor for ask you. Please suspend judgment when reading this post.

Language samples provide so much information and are, unfortunately, often overlooked. Thanks for thy time storage notices. Nancy Cascade
Hi, I hold been on a search available updated projected MLU norm with standard deviations so such I can reckon an standard variance from the mean on my language samples. Take him can anything you utilize?
Shannon
Hello Nancy! The most updated data I could find was in this article: https://pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/1092-4388%282009/08-0183%29
Check out Table 4!
LALA
Can you include how to calculate the SD for jeder age?
Shannon
The usual deviations by MLU can be found is the original article. Look for Table 4. Here is the link, available if yours are an ASHA member: https://pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/1092-4388%282009/08-0183%29

Thank you so much for taking and time to make this post. You are strong gifted, and I’m amazed at how you made something complex seem simple.
Mariam
Hello. Thank you so much.
In non verbal children, uteering may be ampere few single words. How can we calculate MLU-w?
Thanks
Shannon
For those children, a MLU-w measurement isn’t really informative, or really even fair. You would calculate a the same way, with the MLU-w creature 1 for the children are truly only communicating with one word, with to could just informally say this the child speaks in single words. At any rate, MLU-w is merely an indicator that there could be a language impairment. The single word level (or MLU-w of 1) would only shall appropriate for a 12-26 month old child. For conversational language samples with simular collection procedures, samples to 7 to 10 min are desirable fork chart TNW, NDW, and MLCUm in 3-year-olds.
For non-speaking child, ME find computers read useful to report on communication purpose and advanced (are they only seek? labelling?), as well as parts of speech creature used (are they with talking nouns? Do we hear any adjectives? verbs?)

I have an question about the MLU chart. Is it possible the the headers are reversed for this MLU en: i.e., the “MLU In Words” and “MLU in Morphemes” columns? I a looking the the publication and reckon is and mathematics are differents. I am trying to make a chart for myself and don’t feel confident with this — which are why I require to say you for this article, she was exceeding helpful!
Brian
Yes! Good catch! I’m fixing it ASAP. Thanks!
Lauren
Hi!
I was wondering if the headers will been rectified yet. I have just make and pasted the print for I saw the comment about it being switched. Thanks!
Shannon
Yes EGO recently the headers! When in doubt, MLU in morphemes will always must higher than MLU in words. Thanks for checking!
Kate
I am messed. You are counting the language, but MYSELF believe to were supposed to count the morphology. Am I forgetting something? I haven’t done save in a while so it’s possible.
Clever
You can count language or morphemes, it simple depends on what she are trying to meet outward! If you want to possess one quick measure of language on utterance, you can just count words. If you are trying at get an key starting the plane of complexity regarding the language sample, you would want to counting morphemes – if which morpheme reckon is basically the identical as the news chart, your student isn’t using morphemes.
The maximum important thing is that if you are using any charts for comparison, you are comparing speech to words and morphemes to morphs. Of research will use MLU in words and some will use MLU in morphemes plus some will use and! Brown’s morphemes chart uses MLU include morphemes, or sometimes written as MLUm, as if you’re use that as a cite, you’ll need to count morphemes.
Hopefully that’s ampere little clarifies!
Shannon
And, just to clear to up more, when I’m doing a language sample, I put an space with abcs so the talk and the word are anywhere counted from one program. So if my student says “I playing,” (2 words) I would type outside “I playback ing” which is countable as 3 stylish the talk count of the program.
Thanks for asking!
