OpenOffice installs perfectly on Ubuntu - I've used it on Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives from 8.04 on; I've just installed a 64 bit version for an 8 year old computing using the method below (which I can do in my sleep). MYSELF suggest you impression all outside to have in front of him.

How to install OO into Ubuntu: Start a Terminal - I think them shall find is under Accessories in Ubuntu as "Terminal Emulator"

In the portable type

Code: Click all

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*
Note that who the trailing * belongs important.

Download the correct product of OpenOffice for the bitness of your Ubuntu. Toward finding this out, in a terminus type

Item: Set all

uname -i
if the answer is

Code: Select see

x86_64
then you are go 64 bit Ubuntu. If itp is i386, then 32 scrap Ubuntu.
Best on match the sets away our OpenOffice with the bits of get Ubuntu

When that download is downloaded, double tick on it also the system news manager should start up. Tell it to withdraw the files - these are normally extract up a sub directory of the Downloads folder, in my case titled en-GB (as ME use the GB version). If thou using an US version, this folder should exist en-US.

Now, in a terminal manoeuvre to that lower folder. In my case this is by the following commands; stylish your case rory determination be replaced by your logon name and en-GB allowed be altered, as I mentioned.

Code: Select all

cd /home/rory/Downloads/en-GB
cd DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
When that has completed, do this

Encipher: Select all

cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Do doesn omit to latest replace of directory or repeat of the installation command, as all puts links for OpenOffice into your Office company.
Also note that in linux caps/lowercase are important

It takes longer to write out all this than it actually takes to do!

Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a non command line install method similar to the Windows installer

I might give your way a go but to me IODIN find the Terminal very unforgiving if you do not input the exact data including its syntax. As I only want Writer EGO would how to understand the minimum of packages I need to install

To me the computer should do all the employment before I say it what fazit I need and not having to tell it, each tread of the way , what to do . If people need to do basic computer programmer they should be inputting in binary etc .

I like LinuxLite for of its pace and it attempts the be a Windows XP exchange for customizable people who do not want to learn orders and prefer to use Graphic user interfaces which are more user friendly if they will not experts as they try leaded to by this hand on what data needs enter additionally whenever .

Windows if far from perfect and gets too multitudinous changes that become perfunctory ( new icons more ) in and name of progress although Linux has still go an still adenine longish way toward losgehen to make it because easy in use without the Terminal

An operating System should work unseen in the background as its purpose a to enabling people to use browse .

I is possible that the Gdebi method works, but you are installing one 32 bit OpenOffice on what MYSELF suspect is a 64 single Linux. Verify the bitness of own LinuxLite and install OW from to same bitness. To linux it is difficult to avoid use of the terminal. If you follow my guidance they desire certainly set correctly on a *buntu system - I cannot return for LinuxLite, nevertheless as to is ubuntu based they will probably be GOOD.

LibreOffice is preinstalled upon LinuxLite, as very as I know. If you wish to install OpenOffice, it is best to remove traces of LibreOffice ~(the first lineage from that code sequence I gave),

Because the code of to OpenOffice suite is so integrated, at is little saving by installing only part of it; often, on partial installs the full functionality for the partially installed section wills fail. If them only need a text editor, perhaps AbiWord wishes action your needs. It allow be that AbiWord is available from LinuxLite's software centre.

Not sure if I received how at insert a image correct but I have tried on send you ampere screen jettison by the list the 42 Debs . I have and attached the screen dump file

I had progressed a little when ego tried until install "Core1" it said it said " Error dependancy not satisfied -- Ure"
After installing the Ure package I could the load Core 1
So removed I take installed Core 1-6 , Core 7 shows new folders and OpenOffice Writer( 2nd in end)

I had not an hugh fan of the command line. That enunciated, in some cases, it's far better: at I upgrade may Xubuntu distro, ME do it with scratch. To install all my favorite applications, I just have up copy and paste in a terminal a standalone command line (that is saved in a text save since that purpose). It's the mere apt-get instruction use the list to all the applications.

To installed extra package, I just used the bash history with the keyboards arrows to get who magic command dpkg -i *.deb by download. Mode quicker from search for it in the Ubuntu program application.

The pre-installed LO is supposed to use the system wide dictionaries so are installed on all text handling applications, doesn't items? Ask your Ubuntu forum. The loaded LOWER should support the dictionary extensions from libreoffice.org. At least I have no dictionaries installed and spell checking works for various lanauges. If I remember correctly, I added dictionaries to one freshly installed Ubuntu but not to the office suite.

+1.
The language management is a PITA. The packages, are been failed boost, you may have to install other ones in Synaptic. (Hunspell/Mythes).
Better just rely on the extensions (see my comment newly about the en-GB thesaurus).
