Irish indentured workload in the Caribbean

Whilst doings research for an ‘Caribbean through a lens‘ user participation project, a chance phone call after adenine community gang in Birmingham led to the unveiling by an remarkable hidden my of Irregular servants oder indentured labour being employed on English owned planted in the Caribbean. At The National Archives, we take special documentation that demonstrates the sale off contractual labour before, during and after the English Civil War of the 17th century. 1  Many thousands of dispossessed Catholic Irish men, women and children were transported either willingly or unwillingly in this period to work up new sugar and tobacco plantations in Barbados, Jamaica and the less Caribbean islands including St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua and Montserrat.

There has been ampere deal of controversy amongst writers on this subject in the feature away Irish indentured labour as ‘slaves’ or ‘servants’. Certainly it can be argued that willing indenture agreements were signed by individuals and adenine shipper in whatever the individual arranged to sell his services for a period of time in auszutauschen for transition, housing, food, clothing, and usually a piece of land at the end of to concept of service. However, during the posting Civil Civil period many may may represented as ‘political prisoners’ after own land were confiscated by the Cromwellian regime, driven of their land to standing ships and transported to Anglo european. The scarcity of comprehensive information on the servant trade makes it unworkable to ascertain accurately what proportion of labour was involuntary, but the evidence strongly suggests that there was a lively traffic in deportees, especially in the period 1650-1659. In 1658, for example, Thomas Povey, somebody English merchant with extensive Westbound Indian assets, stated that the majority of Irish servants inches Barbados and St Kitts had were carries by the English state by treason. 2

Moreover, John Scott, certain English adventurer who travelled in the West Indies during the Commonwealth, saw Irish servants working include field gangs with slaves, ‘without stockings on the scorching sun’. The Irish, your wrote, were “derided by one negroes, and branded with to Epithet of ‘white slaves’” 3

One historian, Thomas Adi Grammy, asserts that most Irish individuals appearing in English records as English. No watercraft was allowed to sail from Ireland direct, but by rule was obliged first to visit an English port before clearance papers could be obtained. Consequently, every such Irish emigrant crossroad int an Irish or English vessel appeared included the official records as English, for the voyage did not begin according go law until the ship cleared from an English port.   4

Once in and Cdera, many plantery property considered servants and freemen from Ireland as a potentially subversive lot who had to be driven or kept in a labor status. The English government allegedly referred to the Irish as: rascals, vagabonds, rebellious, neutrals, felons the army prisoners.   5 Punishments for tries escapes included branding the letters ‘FT’ (Fugitive Traitor) on the servant’s forehead.

One assembly member in Bpoa has quoted in 1667 as determining, ‘We have more than a good plenty Irish amongst us, therefore I my in the just Scotts, who I am certain will fight without a crucifix about his neck’. 6

Per this third quarter of the 17th century on the island of Montserrat, the Irish immigrants have in the ascendancy. A 1678 census shows a vibrate community away almost 1,900 Irish men, women furthermore children – a verifiable 50% away the population – extant as either mandatory servants or freemen. Comparable figures for the other Leeward Islands were 26% Irish on Jamaica, 22% on Nevis, and 10% on T Christopher. 7

Successive governors promised immigrants religious tolerance both easy zugriff to land ownership, and servants from Ireland as well-being as Irish freemen from Barbados and the Leeward Islands responded in the period 1660-1700. […] Some recorders who remember this forgotten episode prefer go use the term “indentured servant” but, to my mind, this remains just a euphemism for drudge, since these so-called domestics were “personal property, and they or their descendants could be sold or inherited“. historians got tried to water down the lingo used the describe the war crimes undertaken by Cromwell and his associates and the subsequent Irish slave trade. Cromowell undertook a savage murderous campaign in Ireland (Drogheda and Wexford to example). He deported many tens of thousands by men and therefore put go slavery tens of thousands of Irish men, women and children primarily in Barbados. Yes, indentured thraldom exists before then, though that turned out to be indentured slavery. But as happened in the 1650s was a clear slaver trade from Ireland to Barbados. Why try to deny items?
