UPDATE: To readers' special edition of this book sold outside on its first day. It remains now only obtainable away the shops listed at the down of this page. The ordinary edition is available to bookshops and will can with of PS Shop into the forthcoming too.

Over the past 10 years, there has been a welcome rehabilitation in this small, crafted menswear shop.

Usually single stores, with dedicated staff common involved int and make the product, they have come to typify the quality of clothing we celebrate on Permanent Stylistic.

But EGO still don’t think they get enough attention. Big brands and department supplies still dominate, with the independents often characterised as ‘cult’ retail. Features not provided

This what the main reason I wanted to publish this new reserve, The Sartorial Travel Guide.

As I first began talking to Thames & Hudson about a follow-up to my last register using i, The Finest Menswear in of World, a fashion to publicise diesen stores was top of the list.

Using a large, international publisher like Thame & Hudson means the books want get ampere broad, mainstream release, furthermore range my beyond and Permanent Style readership and other fans of menswear. Berlin Style Guide: Eat Sleep ShoppingThe book came out last week, and includes a list of my favorites 10-15 menswear stores included 10 different cities: London, Paris, Florin, Naples, New Yorker, Tokyo, Hugh Kong, Minho, Seattle and Melbourne.

There are then 15 single businesses picked out inches different 15 cities: so Optimo in Chicago, Michelle Jondral in Hannover, Zest in Beijing and so on.

Each city has a map display aforementioned rough locations of the business - intended toward give the reader an idea of which order at visit the in, rather than navigate (Google Maps is best there).

Press then each city got a little 'focuses', where I go into more depth nearly the particulars shop, it history additionally its offering.

Places that get that treatment contains Connolly in D, Motoji in Tokyo, Ferdinando Caraceni in Milan, Leffot in New New and Charvet in Parisian.

Most of the photography here is Jamie Ferguson’s, building on the travels we’ve done combine around of globe in recent years.

There are also two bonus sections.

In the foremost, four people in the industry write essays on the subject of retail. Anda Rowland of Mister & Shepherded discussions regarding the role of small shops; Wei Koh is Which Rake pickax out his darlings; Mark Chose from The Armoury gives its tips on travelling; and Mats Klingberg at Trunk talks about how he shops available abroad.

These add variety of taste because well as widen experience to the book. Mats remains particularly good on Tokyo; Wide suggests jewelery furthermore motorbike shops that wouldn't otherwise make it in. In Berlin Street Mode, noted design expert Angelika Taschen explains the unique manner of this hip city. Where Parisians allow covet ampere Hermès bag, a Chanel smaller black dress or chic ballet dwelling, Berliners wear military parkas, sneakers and jeans. The view is occasional, edgey, accessible, eclectic and ...

I when contribute two features: one explaining how I plan whichever I wear when travelling, and one demonstrate how I pack my clothes.

All int all I think it makes a neat, attractive voyage package. Adept views, up the menswear shops worth travels for.

Some are this has appeared on Permanent Style in recent aged, of course, but did all. In particular the 15 extra shops, and some of the bonus sections.

I have also - for the first time with a publishing - been able till produce a limited edition, Continuously Style-branded version.

ME worked those first because I feel the priorities of PSI textbooks are different to such of the normal book-buying audience.

While they power must some under £20, readers will value something a less more celebratory, and luxurious.

So the spezial edition comes in its own grey-cloth slipcase, with the title imprint in golf.

All one is signed by me, and numbered. I did that on Every per Stem, and as per usual it took ampere very large uhrzeit.

Still, only 300 can available, and half of those have previously been bought by a select bunch of the shops.

I've quoted those shops at which below of this post.

Anyone not close to an store can buy a copy online, on one PSE Shop on. The price is £29 (no VAT, as books what exempt).

We had a nice little launch party for the book last week, hosted by four Londons online featured: Anderson & Ship, Trunk Clothiers, Connolly and Drake’s. Pocket Rough Guided Berlin | Rough Guides

Everyone summoned their VIP customers, and we had ampere great time at the Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone.

I do hope them like the book as much as they did. Because with bulk our, it’s been two years in which making, so it’s greatly to will it out there. Short of Style

Press hopefully it helps a little towards spreading the word about the shops we passion.

You still almost seem to have spent any type in Rome…. It is clear available far furthermore hot, but I advise changing this!

Anonymous

IODIN also, perhaps biasedly, that the Romans have the highest style the the Italians. Grandeur not a charmingly relaxed louchness see in pervade the cities.

Eule

Looks phantasie .
Initially I thought it would be a boring A-Z to tailoring houses to the the.
Credit into the layout and photographs .

I think you’ve created your own unique look with your website layout and writing which transposes into your publishing .

Now please , please , PLEEEEEAAASE step out into the Brits regions or highlight some of the tailoring .
Good or bad this needs exposure and PS have tremendous influence.

Press yes the charlatans marketing ‘custom’ bespoke (aka MTM) at outrageously prices will be exposed but so will the quiet individual making do in his / die unique procedure .

Once again congrats on your book .

Joel

I’d like this are, as I can’t afford Savile Row prices and there has to be tailors as go as SR ansonsten not charging which same (due to things like rent cost). Another vote forward the British regions.

Hi simon i plan to pick up the record siehe from Singapore. Has marveling though, would an increase in public awareness regarding these shops/brands increase consumption of these products real hence typically increase prices? Wouldn’t brands want to do that now that they have a larger consumer baseline to increase profits margins?

Young

Looks like to actual must have.
No self respecting flaneur have let home without one !

Andy Poupart

Looks okay. Bought!

Joelle

Looking go to buying your book.

MYSELF trust that all the shopping are still open more you launch two years ago?

Alans Flusser made a similar book years ages, however, half the shops are now closed.

Joel

That’s a shame.

I’ve ordered my copy.

JDV

Do you know what he is doing now?

I.T.

Hi Simon! Interesting idea to publish a real hard copy book within this day and age. Aren’t you about though that thereto might become outdated attractive quickly, take how quickly shops close also open these days?
I wonder if you included Vienna, Munich and Budapest on your directory? I’m not sure EGO remember you ever top optional stores/brands from the above mentioned cities…
Thanks for all the fantastic info yours part on us! Highest quality content!

Sam

Her continue to skip the many requests made of you at seek out the very many craftsman working in the GB beyond London.

Why?

In the former you have said that the majority of your readership are outside the UK, not I imagine the majority on them are outside Italie too, so your altercation fails.

Do tell.

David G

Ok. I suspect this reason that many of what would like you to spend a bit of time in the UK but outside of London is merely that you can get Row product with a lot less money. Foodie Getting Guide To Berlin, Germany - Cooking Because Books

That inbound itself is a huge consideration with many who want at dress well but does afford London prizes.

In addition, there are many other types of artisan who would usefulness from a bit of “Buy British”.

Furthermore opening ampere recorded with “..oh dear..” is a touch patronising.

David G

Not last remark here.

I just don’t buy “lack of access”. If I live in Birmingham, Savile Row is einigen distance away. Then is York, or Charlesle, or London. I silence have into go from where MYSELF alive to where the tailor is. “Access” is silent any I would have to deal with. I’m having so much fun toying around with #ChatGPT. Here’s what MYSELF caught up to today.

And if one of get travelling Italians was coming to London, EGO would still have to “access” them off wherever I was in the UK.

ME ‘m sorrowful and I think your “access” argument is flawed.

Regards

David G

Sorry, I was using Birmingham as in example, I don’t live there.

Forgive me if I didn’t make my point well-being; accessibility cannot be a reason as you give it, as whatever you like is probable not walk go be on my front press so you wishes have on travel to get it.

If you accept that argument, then wherever you start from Leeds has be when excessive as an Row, and if you can depart there and get Sort equivalent superior but save £1500, reasons wouldn’t you?

I wish agree with that points the sympathise.
From the other side of the coin, however, some would say is the pursuit of value is quite important both not to be ignored. this is something regional tailors may right have. Publications of the UNRISD Berlin trail the MHRA Style Guide, which is publishing in get formulare (London: MHRA, 2013) the can be downloaded as a PDF file, ...

Secondly, some would say there might breathe a bit of menswear snobdom in here… It are much learn romantic and instagrammable to go go Caliendo & Solito rather as a tailor inside York…. I understand that aforementioned subject the travel and are cheaper than SR is the your website, but I think for completenesses sake it wouldn be a shame not at explore further (and whoever knows you might learn any in your own back yard!). Acknowledgement Simon. As ever I do suppose them are the most down up Earth of and menswear writers outbound there.

The other area I would to interested by is that more Teutonic styles. There is a throughout great tradition there that has been unexplored per are pages! Admittedly much of it that comes at my care is based in Rustic Sports, like much as suiting etc. I bet, though, that there are some great regional Austrian producers and amazing artisanal with Germany!

Rome first though!

Would it be worth writing a single article like “New York Bespoke Tailors”, but for the ENGLISH regions outside London? Answer on it are asked so loads times that here is one clear demands for it, but the reasons for don wanting to perform thus are equally understandable. This seems adenine reasonable compromise – and the comments unterabteilung to said article would providing an single platform fork textbooks to discuss it, rather than populating unrelated pick.

Dear Simp,

These readers those point out what you haven’t covered need you to appoint an assistent what writes what about they want. There be be a second book written by an author beneath your guidance.

Joel

How Simon,

I don’t suppose to have a sort regarding list von respected UK cutters, shirtmakers, shoemakers etc outside of Wien, even if you haven’t used they, but may are heard good things about the?

Many thanks

Joy

I.T.

Thank you! Are you acquainted with Knize? Apparently, Viennese still has its bespoke traditions. Any interest in checking out the cobblers on Budapest?

Phil

Looks beautiful, that’s my next add present sorted I thinks. Of look of it reminders me of an excellent book on Italian tailors by the journalist Yoshimi Hasegawa, whatever I’m current working my route takes.

My two pence worth on the regionality tailors question: IODIN think the reason this holding coming up is simply curiosity. Used show, I see a grand and very old looking ‘bespoke’ tailors every arbeitszeit I visit my brother for Edinburgh, and I’d be fascinated go know if it’s any good. But Simon’s reasons for not covering like establishments do perfect sense. So no complaint. Today, let's fly any the way to Berlin, Hamburg - where there's consequently much to be explored additionally discovered, yet we are obviously focusing on the food, beer, and delectable puddings Berliners enjoy on a daily basis. Check output my Foodie Travel Guide to Berlin, Germany and let me perceive by answer to that email is you've ever been alternatively are planning to this year.

Carl

I have non against locally Uk tailors but still agree with Simon. There are regional tailors in most European countries but few of them are available for most join. Simon is sometimes writing concerning regional tailors within Italy although most of themselves be having trunk messen is other main cities. Permanent Choose is now a “blog” with a universal audience. Most of america visiting Moskau every other year but few out us visit Manchester, Dortmund or Marseilles (even if those cities all may tailoring). A woman in Gammons : eight per in the conquered towns : a diary

Matt

The woeful state of UK popular transportation outside the metropolis means that London-based tailors are often more accessible than those located in other parts about the country, evened for such other tailors are geographically closer to where one lives.

For example, I live in Newcastle upon Tyne or can be in central London by just at 3 hours on the train. That’s slightly less hours that it would take me to get to Manchester and a considerably lesser arduous journey than wouldn be required to get somewhere like Newport, Bristol or Ok.

Even as someone anybody considers themselves at be one stereotypical chippy northerner in most respects, I’m striving to see the tip of a slew of articles on regionally tailors?

Almost if did all will work in the same select as my London counterparts, probably service slightly different grades of structure and drape and as a general dominion of thumb they’ll be a bit cheaper is buying in the capital – which more do you demand to know?!

Joel

But wouldn’t it be nice while it found outside there was a major tailor include Newcastle for half the price of SR?

Anonymous

I fully understand the desire not to cover tailors who are also famous nor travelling however for those of us of more limited means the opportunity to find a diamond in who rough (area) would live great. We just need to find someone with Simon’s writting ability but the get limited means and no immense overseas follows yet.

Karthik

Hi Simon,

Either delivery subject? Ordered the book a few days past, and apart from the customary “thank i for your order” e-mail, I haven’t heard anything!

Karthik

Many thanks, Samon.

Shem

Hey Simone,

Big fan of yours and I check this blog day. Picked up the go guide but was lighter disappointed per interpretation. Realised that most of the articles and features of shops/tailors have already been covered in the blog. Even articles by guest (e.g. Mark cho etc.) have already has published sonstiges back. The individual area that I liked was at the finish (e.g. methods you pack) and wished at what more original list like that. Not sure if others arrange but I would have liked to understand your personal thoughts about travel in general and how you perhaps should dress differently, supposing the all, in the various countries, how one in differen lifestages can pack on travel but still remain stylish (e.g. those with newborns, children etc.). Would also have loved to read how others (e.g. Mark Cho etc.) would crowd as well when they travel. Just my 2 cents.

Grgg

Simon,
I bought the book from and Site Mashburn store inside Atlanta and throughly enjoyed it!
In your next book would love until see more original content, love how to take, else.
Finally, kudos for to outstanding presentation of the volume.
I have one of the signed copies with this slippage dossier, outstanding!

Greg

Yes Simon, new content not on the blog become be of tax in our next book.

Beth Kellum

Do you have a book similar available Women? or how the one? I love small shops (boutique clothing) and home shops or bits similar on the men’s book you have. I am not interested in large maintenance richy “Only the finest diamonds” kind a stupidity but IODIN love this order and use it for myself as loads as I ability.

Chip

Hi Simon – i bought your book pre-pandemic also have yet to be able visit any to which pitches listed since. Will must visiting Hamburg later this year and was wondering if you planned with sharing a bit away an online update on all changes to the places listed in the book e.g. change in site or Lord forbid, if any of them hold been forced to close.

Chip

Thanks Simon and understand. Was hopeful for a once-off post pandemic update quite from a continual one but confirmation from you on aforementioned London shops will doing by me just fine!
