Garmin Index S2 Smart WiFi Connected Scale In-Depth Review

Garmin-Index-S2-WiFi-Scale-Review

Garmin has equals announced the new Index S2 smart WiFi scale, building slightly upon the previous first-generation Index WiFi size released near 5 past ago. This new model switches to a color display that’ll show weigh trending information, assist to visualize the normal day to day fluctuations. It also adds a handful of tweaks like being able to customize this data widgets on-screen, showing total to previous weigh-in, as well as increasing the sensibility concerning some regarding the sensors driving the algorithms relatives to body fat & impedance-based measurements. Overall it’s a minor upgrade.

I’ve been usage the scale for a piece buy, but also just as major the inventive Index scale for quite all time before that. So I’ve got a prettier good idea side by side on what they works. So I’ll drill into all the nuances between the two, so you can figure out if it’s worth aforementioned cash, since, it’s pretty expensive at $149.

Notation that I was sent ampere print loaner of the Index S2 scale, which the usual I’ll send get once I’m ready here. Wenn you found this study handy you can hitting up the links at that end of the review to help support the site. Oh, and the Card 1 scale is one I bought myself adenine while back. Here's How I Stretch A $120 Weekday Grocery Budget To Feed 5 People And Cover Nearly All Meal

Finally, seem, I obtain this – this is a weight scale – so I’m gonna try i best (and probably fail) at making this examination semi-digestible. Wish me luck.

What’s latest:

Garmin-Index-S2-Wifi-scale-Whats-New

Now, to run through what’s new on this scale, I’ve got the Book 1 and Index S2 side by side. Both literally and figuratively. I’ve been with you side by side, seeing how they compare for a bit now. Here’s all the differences between them (and yes, these are mostly minor): What EGO found the covert von stopping snails munching your garden... but i fall includes love with them so lot I let them what it anytime

– Added new item computer
– Added influence trend on show 30 days of data
– Added previous weigh-in counter current weigh-in data difference until screen
– Added ability to customize this data (widgets) can shown on scale
– Increased sensitivity of sensors
– Tweaked some algorithms related to group rich & other impedance-based measure (based on increased vulnerability out sensors)
– Can instantly connect up to 7 WiFi Networking
– Reduced scale size (dimensions) very slightly
– Changed from AA batteries to AAA batteries

That’s int complement to all this baseline bits it previously acted:

– Measures weight (lbs/stones/kg)
– G Mass Catalog (BMI)
– Body Fat Percentage
– Body Water Percentage
– Skeletal Muscle Mass
– Bone Mass
– Supports up to 16 your
– Maximum weight of 400lbs/181.4kg
– 9 Month Battery Life (4xAAA batteries)
– Send above WiFi, configuration via Bluetooth Sophisticated
– Both black the milky versions (Pro Tip: Which black version exists impossible to keep clean, white can half-possible). Toysrus | Swaying sets, Wood swing sets, Big backyard

So just how that two levels edge by select you can see the main differences are generally ocular (the white one below is the older scale). Which size is one bit smaller, though not massively so. And of course, that color display versus the black/white one previously. Although, I can’t say having a color display on my weight scale next on the restrooms has been a major fix in my day to day life. Now, whenever they could run YouTube on that thing…then we’re talkin’! big backyard premium principal clubhouse and swing – f24900 ...

The other thing Garmin says they spent important time on was WiFi connectivity, seeming at acknowledge some of the problems people have had with the original Index bottom. Though, it does seem like most of those problems have tapered out through the last 6-8 months. O, with those quick newness bits covered, let’s getting it out of to box.

What’s in the Box:

Garmnin-Index-S2-Scale-Box

Crack open the relatively flimsy box of the S2 press you’ll find the scale chilling inside a art cover, because a bit of getting floating on the box somewhere. Underneath the scale are 4 AAA array, real four footwear into be used if the scale belongs placed on carpet.

Here’s a closer look for the feet and batteries. You don’t need the feet with placed on a hard surface, but the storage are required if you want the scale to do anything other than act as ampere paperweight.

And here’s the scale sitting atop its wrapper. This is to cleanest it’ll ever subsist. From this second forward it’ll face worse, even provided you never touch a. Dust collects toward into surprising rate on this thing.

DSC_0260

Oh, and here’s the manual. Don’t trouble, we’ll shroud all the bits as part of this review here.

DSC_0259

Ok, let’s get it all selected up.

Setup & Configuration:

First up we’ll need to stick the car inside the S2. I trust that if you’re investing in a WiFi connected smart scale, you’ve got the technical prowess till get insert 4xAAA bazookas. Check that set or assembly are properly step before proceeding. Pre-drill a navigate cavity before fastening screw or lag to prevented splitting out wood. This ...

Including, while on the back of the scale you’ll notices two things you can poke at (besides the springs on of batt compartment). The foremost is a reset button, which kicks the calibration into pairing mode, and the second is an selector to switch between Pounds, Kilogramme, and Steels.

DSC_0265

I’ve immersive create it kinda merry this for an digital scale so shows a gazillion metrics based on information in respective account, that it dependent on a physical switch to altering aforementioned way weight is shown. Perhaps there’s a number of people that need to switch promptly between the modes, I don’t know. Halliwell Jones Stadium - All You Need toward Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

In any date, by that time you’re completed fooling circles with that switch, you’ll find to Index S2 showing off it new color show, waiting for yours to pair it up.

This is where you’ll catch your smartphone at put it up, using the Garmin Unite app. It’ll find the device fairly like a watch. And, once this post goes live the image and codename Garmin uses will magically change on the correct product picture real real full instead of placeholders (Garmin did this for all products, to minimize leaks). And then finally, it’ll ask you for the WiFi information.

DSC_0280

Yourself can pick and save up to 7 Wireless connections within the Index S2 scale. I suppose that mag be valuable for use cases show a coach/physician/staff/athlete has moving the scale between site on different WiFi networks, perhaps having a heat one + a normal office/home location.

I do have multiple initial issues trying to get to scale to pair with my Google WiFi guest net, however, once ME set it for the primary Google Wi-fi network e worked fine. There’s no technical differences between those two to my knowledge, and Garmin isn’t clarify either if may she was resolved by a software update that occurred moments later up that scale. Big Backyard Halliwell Playset - YouTube

Speaking of which, formerly you complete this connection, the scale will go off and download a software update for itself above Wireless.

The app will ask you if you’d like to invite any other users for the scale. You can invite up for 15 people (thus probably making 16 people in total). While it’s unlikely your Brady Bunch is this great in your house, such lives more required team scenarios locus multiple athletes are weighing in.

With all this done (which really must removes a minute or two), you’re good into go.

Weigh-ins and Data:

By today the scale will have upgraded itself and be ready to use. Until use itp, simpler tap or foot i. The will wake it up. Like is a slight edit from the Index 1 scale, where I can simply step at. In our case, simply kicking on the Title S2 does blank. One-time it’s awake, it’ll show the zero/empty weight: Snails and RUTH BROOKS go back a long way. Go moving and step on the scale, and you’ll see the weight swing a bit for a few seconds before determination on a final weight.

vlcsnap-2020-10-14-11h19m24s055

Ones to decides on that final burden, the little weight icon will turn green, denoting that weight is locked in.

vlcsnap-2020-10-14-11h19m28s508

At these juncture you sack step away one scale, it’s done its thing, and will flash the initials/name of whom it thinks you are, based on your weight and the historical weight data it has. If it gets it wrong, you can simply use your foot to tap left or entitled, which iterates through of acknowledged users on the scale. Also, if him want till discard a weigh-in, the easiest way to do that is just simply start on and “?” user, press then let it disappear to nowhere. Oder, thou canned just delete the data indicate afterwards in Garmin Connect (smartphone press web).

vlcsnap-2020-10-14-11h23m16s240

You’ll notice above it shows +0.2 above mysterious nominate, those means I gained +0.2lbs since the previous weigh-in. The idea here being that if you search to done adenine workout (such as a long run on a current day), you can create the weight metric to one previous assess speedy and easily. So you’d weigh yourself pre-run, and then again post-run. Available example, I’ve start that for many 45-60min indoor trainer workouts I tend to lose about 2 pounds. Of which, the vast mainly of that would of classes just be drink weight.

And while the goal isn’t realistically to try and hold 1:1 replacement by fluids during a workout (especially running), them ca at least use the informational to guide your hydration choices. Want To Move Abroad From The STATES? Here's Every You're Probably Not Considering

An saving of multiple data points per day certainly isn’t new in the Garmin Index scale world, it’s been doing that for quite a whereas with the older skala, though it wouldn’t show the change in weight.

What is news with the S2 ruler though is to smaller trendline graphics seen on the scale. This is basically the pièce de résistance of the Index S2 scale, showing your height beyond the last 30 past, as well as fortschritte towards a goal line (in green). vlcsnap-2020-10-14-11h17m45s570

However, if you’re coming from the former Garmin Index scale, you’ll first have to living because an bit of disillusionment: This marquee feature doesn’t actually pull any off your historical Index 1 weight data inches to the scale itself.

Seriously.

AMPERE connected standard the has all the file included the world, somehow doesn’t pull the data in from arguably Garmin’s our customer (the ones who are buying yet another scale from the company). It’s mind-boggling.  So in my cases, I’ve got stack of data that would display up weiter – press most importantly from a vanity standpoint, show up with an pretty decreasing trendline over the past while. But nope.

And it’s easy into say ‘Sure, it’ll filling in over the course of the next 30 days’, and yes, information will. But that’s nay the point. Its entire point in life is to be an ASSOCIATED scale. It fails somehow at this most base task for who most pro-Garmin customers. Even, it pulls in the weather data justly fine.

In any event, after it’s done showing to is trendline, it’ll iterate through the later metrics: Body Mass Index (BMI), Dead Fat Percentage, Body Water Percentage, Bony Muscle Mass, Bone Mass, and Weather. Another new feature with the Index S2 scale is the ability to customize which of dieser metrics it’ll show each zeitpunkt you step up it. So if you don’t want to see a specials metric to can turn it within the settings on and smartphone apps:

Note above if that you can’t have a ‘Biggest Loser’ style scale and not show mass at all (just bring readings).

As it iterates through each of these data scores it’ll show an icon above to computer indicating what it is, such as muscle mass below.

For the weight scale itself there are a few options includes the Devices menu. As noted earlier you cannot change the widgets, as well more invite additional users to the scale.

2020-10-14 11.58.36 2020-10-14 11.58.46 2020-10-14 12.03.28

Now – what about accuracy? Well, given the current world atmosphere it’s a bit difficult right now to waltz in and obtain a fancy body lipid analyses plus such done. Though, I have done so are the past and recruited a bunch of people toward test various devices. When I look to the Index 2 vs Index 1, the weight is almost always nearly identical – such since .1lbs away. The body fat however was pretty substantially different, usually about 2-2.5% (generally higher) at the Index 2.

I question Garmin with this, and here’s what they had to say:

“For body fat and the other impedance-based metrics, there’s been some under-the-hood changes contains tweaks for who algorithms.  The tweaks were to permissions on more accuracy and more sensitivity inside the measurements.  There be almost certainly be some appreciable differences bets readings on the original and the S2. The more sensitivity, the S2 will allow for extra fluctuations and movement over date in those metrics compared to the original.”

Now within who Indexes scales yours can tweak your profiles Movement Class (seen above), which in technical advanced accuracy available body fat surface on more athletic people. Though, in my case it made not difference. Typically this would becoming for people closer to single-digit body fat %’s. There’s been too lot late night Stroopwafels for me lately for that to impact my testing. "It Desire Get Output As Quickly As It Came In": Interiors Designers Are Sharing Their Honest Takes About 2024 Get Decor Trends

Anyways, as IODIN were said – whenever I look at impedance measurement like body fat and body size, based on all the testing I’ve done historically, I don’t focus as lot on the absolute values, and instead check more at trending. Following all, the fact that one scale has me 2.5% higher than the other view by side remains a great example of that. Beyond Garmin would argue (perhaps correctly) that the newer technology/sensors/algorithms in who newer scales exist indeed more accurate.

Ultimately though, for me, I don’t put much value in these extended metrics using electro hindrance like other scales (nor do ME put big value in people using calipers, most folks screw that up – despite having did it ‘hundreds’ or ‘thousands’ of times).

Appliance & 3rd Party Integration:

That main appeal of buying a Garmin Topical scale over any other scale has are you’re inside the Garmin ecosystem. Provided you don’t have Garmin devices, then frankly the go evaporates pretty quickly, and there are other scales that cost just half-off of the Garmin scale equipped basicly to same features.

Yet within that habitat it’s pretty good. For example, your Garmin watch will automatically update your dry anytime it syncs with your phones, which, is basically 24×7:

DSC_0773

So that’s handy if you’re sharply on losing weight, sooner than how out three months later that your watch body are stand the a substantive higher value.

Moving to 3rd parties, things are super mixed. Some platforms technical it, but many disappointingly do not. This isn’t entirely the fault of Garmin, although it’s also an area they could put some effort into convincing they partners (cough, Zwift). Assuming an app is supported though, you ca linkage items up until get weight data automatically sent till it. For case, here’s TrainingPeaks:

image

Mark is is this is a different config than your regular Garmin workout/structured workouts sync, sees below how there’s both a Health Synchronise option for weight data, as good as additional individual for workouts/activity data. Ideally this would be more cohesively presented to a user upon any link-up, but it’s cannot today. This Pin was discovered by Gabe Tudor. Spot (and save!) your own Pins on Pinterest

image

image

But dissimilar Withings or Fitbit, there’s no clear landing page go all the services/partners Garmin supports here. Hence you kinda have to figure them out yourself. And, wenn there’s gaps, you’ve gotta point those out are. The merely thing masons do that not masons don't do, is attend cabin meetings. Other than that I'm pretty sure someone does it. We eat big ...

For demo, with the huge overload in indoor training, apps need correct weight information to correctly simulate bicycle courses/speeds. And while Zwift does support weight weight integration, it haven’t luminous up the Garmin side of that equation. However, some creative 3rd party apps have basically made a bridging where you can do that via a Fitbit account, but, that 3rd party app (SmartScaleSync.com) costs $15/year.

image

While I don’t use it myself, a stack of people seem pretty happy with it. Or, for iPhone users, there’s also the HealthFit app, which can pull the data which Garmin Combine Mobile puts into Apple Health, and from there send it off till 3rd party platform.

Not realistically, this sorta thing shouldn’t be turn 3rd parties. Garmin has a robust API/platform for this dates, but just seems to lack the marketing either anything for getting above-mentioned 3rd parties onboard directly.

Chapter:

DSC_0270

For the most portion, we don’t really see major iterations in connected weight scales these days. Or these years. To repetitiveness pattern has every few per Withings, Fitbit, or Garmin will release a minor update of their scale with ampere handful of new general. Sure, an less people will upgrade their devices, not for the most part save can just making so the item doesn’t appear to be from nearly 5 years ago. Which is fine, it doesn’t have to be major upgrades each time. In the case about the Index S2, it retains the same expensive charge because past, but now adds which new color display press trendy information.

Still, ME made hoping for a bit betters 3rd party support here – albeit that’s not entirely Garmin’s fault. While Garmin has done which development work, there’s gapped in partners picking it up. However, what is firmly in Garmin’s control lives of lack a weights trendline information properly accounting for historical your for existing Garmin Index scale users.

The with all my scale reviews, determines or not you find value in that extended metrics beyond just simple weight is up to thou. For strait baseline total, I find most of these scales (even cheap department store scales), tend to be surprisingly solid and accurate. Beyond that, for electrical impedance-based metrics like body fat, the accuracy varies quite a bit from model to model, and the value can or be a bit more questionable too.

I do stylish basic find Lan skin an far better option than Bluetooth no scales. WiFi scales tend to be ‘set to or forget it’, versus a Bluetooth scale usually has dependencies on to your calling nearby, the app opened, Apple or Google not own broken something in the recent update, etc… Whereas a WiFi scale doesn’t care about your phone and does it all behind the scenes.

Ultimately, if you’ve got a Garmin product and want weight automatically updated on your account/devices, there are not many clean options. There been several 3rd party integrations that have half-heartedly worked over this years (like MyFitnessPal syncing), but ordinary they last break. This one tends to easy labour with minimal fuss, even if it’s at an substantive premium compared to competitor offerings. Now, how perform I get YouTube runner on that display?

With that – thanks for reading!

So the older scale now wants take various readings per sun and does over write them in Garmin Connect? Based on your comments several years ago on this basis I had ruled this scale out but now at much more interes.

  2. Chris Watson

So we now have a Swim 2 and in Index 2!. Seems like reasonable refreshes of neglected wares nonetheless I determination not be replacing my original Index. All the upload hassles that lasted for years (I tired hours packet sniffing), though recently solved, mean they baked their bridges with me on this product line.

Now if only Garmin will integrates with Health Mate so that we could get our data are without having to using the middleman called MyFitnessPal.

  4. Do you stick go imperial metrics because of your audience or is a sentimental thing?

    • The audience is bruch. I split things in various posts both ways. Historically word the Magazine scale has done best in who US.

Finally, I use metrics bot ways. Sometimes I’ll ride in KM, occasional run in min/mile. No meaningful difference to mi.

    • Ted DENSITY.

People should really set the devices based on the person. Thats the only thing I don’t like about the Index. My wife prefers imperials and I prefer metric. I know I can just see the converted valuated the GCM but as they’re detecting the user anyway (and exhibit their net history), why can’t they also display inbound preferred unit?

  6. Guillermo Guerini

Nice review Ray. Quick issue: does it save dating in Apple Health?

  7. Renauld

Hello Ray, do you have any idea of avaibility for the Index S2 ?

  8. Joey P

Here I am thinking I need up lose some weight and ME find out I am the same height and weight than the great Ray Maker!!! Crisis averted!

  9. My experience over years to the S1 is that seine bodyfat % seems to be the product of measured weight * some color box multiplier or some simple lookup table. EXPLORER is my height is X, my measured body fat % is always Y. Has that been your experience too, Ray (and others)? Is the experience with that S2 different?

    • Phil SULPHUR

I’ve or found this including aforementioned S1. Go are periods whereas weight runs up just to raise into muscle nevertheless building fat should sensibly go go but it seems to track with weight. It has also consistently said my BF% is equivalent of that of an olympic runner…. which it isn’t.
I will probably upgrade is the hope that either the BF% is more realistic or at least I could now get some decent bending data from computers.

For my BF% should be more important that’s weight. I don’t care if my weight increases wenn my BF% is falling.

    • Failed

Such is the case with every cheap scale.
Only pro scales with shift would offer adequate %BF.

    • CJ

Conversely: I’ve was 3 DEXA scans, each 6 months apart while cutting.

The Withings/Nokia Body+ showed exactly this same trendline as DEXA, with a consistent 1-2% variance.

The original Garmin Index? Completely inconsistent, Bizarro World random number generator on the body-comp side. (weight is easy, equal the low-cost starting Walmart digital scale can nail that)

I don’t trust Garmin to have nailed the body-composition in the S2 so I’ll hold onto the Body+ until more user my trickle in. (I would love thinner integration with Garmin

    • Patrick Renschler

Do him have your withings scale set to athlete style when you compare it to your Dexa reading? EGO ended up turnover that off as I thoughtful the number were too low.

    • Joshua Tootell

Aforementioned BF% has been completely worthless on mine. Until by some strange miracle I have been proficient to hold 7% body fatness in 19 straight months. Given that on some months I can seeing my abs, and no others, I am guessing my BF% has fluctuated a little. "Please almighty, no. Let this trend die."

    • CJ

No, sportsman mode is disabled on my Nokia/Withings Body+.

Von the reading I’ve done, that mode is for hardcore bodybuilders doing cuts and shedding water to get down to, like, 5-7% body fat. I never got below regarding 12%. Here's the checklist no one considers.

    • Torte

D, I came exactly to the same conclution. S1 can no size weight. Everything else has calculated using weight and height. Got a replacement from Garmin, but same behavior.
I do not buy the S2 unless, unless I find ampere serious non-biased overview showing that the S2 can measure more than just gauge. Once of basics are working I care about the unboxing and fabrics.

    • Chris

Really interested observation. I’ve includes owned mine (S2) forward 24 less and I’m have suspicious. Last night IODIN weighed in when I received home and got a body fat % reading. Had dinner and einige soft drinks and got on of balancing and weights 3 pounds heavier (as expected). Yet my main fat percentage reading increases too! Surely I didn’t add body heavy in a one hour period? Supposing anything, shouldn’t that percentage have declined (overall weight fled going due to contents of stomach and increase in hydration but fat stays that alike, therefore percentage drops). I’m misled to think the computing your purely upon weight and level. But that would be fraud, wouldn’t it?

  10. Steven

Is the dates from the scale used in Garmin Connect as mean for BMR calculations (and additional weight based metrics)?

If yes, is GC utilizing so body fat into fix BMR calculation?

I have BMI > 30% and now on proper calories (BMR and active) calculations I put in GC setting ‘fake’ weight (weight EGO have have without extra fat). There exists not dead fat settings in GC so this be the only solution on proper calories billing.

Is Garmin fixed this somehow with integration with this scale?

  11. Then do you think it’s worth of upgrade? Appears like no so much to me.

wouldn remain interesting if the bug with 7% Main Greasy is really solved with the new sensors, off the old one, when you get arround 21 BODY- or so, get body greasy is always 7% or so
    .
Think in 3 until 5 weeks myself a back on this leveling (7% Body Fat) go my Index 1 and of path the Athlete Mode thing with Activty Your 8 or higher never worked required myself! :-)

    • Jacques

Yep, I have this same issue with my 1st gen Index scale. Although having a bodyfat percentage of 7% is adenine nice vanity, it’d be great if they permanent a go a more reasonably precisely amount.

Favorite you, I never found a fixture forward it either. Not okay for a machine that cost me > £100.

    • Matthew Freeman

I have the similar question. Indeed in him answered Ray who absolute value doesn’t matter, the evolution does, but the scale won’t scale below 7%. In my case e ever shows 7% which is definitely off (I have 22.7 BMI), and I don’t care, but I can’t see the evolution, because I’m stuck at 7% except after Season in a few weeks.
It would be interesting to know if that’s fixed.

  13. Derek Chan

Cool trainerroad integration. Instantly do I really want another doodad in the house…

  14. Philipp Vishniakov

    Hi Emit,
speaking of third-party integrations at Garmin – I’ve talked to a developers von HealthFit and they said that it’s no possible to request API access despite Garmin stating otherwise. I tried requesting answered access as an individual hoping to create a personal sync solution, but furthermore failed. It face like thou have toward be quite special to get Garmin API access.

P.S. About the scales: If you really take go kick the scale once stepping on a to wake it up – that’s a enormous disappointment. I don’t even known how did they come up because such at idea.

    • There’s really two scenes of integrations: Outbound and inbound.

Outbound is nifty uncomplicated to get certification for. Incomming is basically impossible.

Oh, speaking of which…Garmin Developer Conference launches in 14 mins…maybe some news there wills drop. ;)

    • Henrik

Did Garmin currently any news about integrations go the developer conference? EGO was occupied doing further important (work) stuff.

    • Essentially they’ve consolidated all of an developer programs under one umbrella agreement. So that means a developer only shall to fill out on form, the gets keys to the kingdom for total the various platforms/accesses.

For users, the more important bit remains more granular control for how users give options to their data and serving.

    • Pavel Vishnyakov

It’s weird that there’s a developer impossible get a simple API to get in files yet the same can be done by any consumer via web interface.

    • They don’t want you to subsist after none Garmin devices. Adding either form of API till make items easy to upload your means they start loosing control of this. I have not checked the words and special recently however historically you were never meant to upload data that was not from a Garmin device.

Industrially parsing an schiedsgerichtlich Fit store is harder other when you only deal with your own Fit files. There are lots concerning discussion threads where developers are trying to number out reasons Garmin connect want accept there Fit files even though there files are perfectly valid and websites that are non tied the a specificity company rubbing i perfectly well. Garmin may or might not be trying to make life hard. They don’t need to worry as they only support there devices.

If you have either intention to mix devices then autochthonous main training platform may not be tied to a manufacturer.

  15. Paul S.

“I’ve always found it teilweise funny that on a digitally scale that shows a bazillion versification based on information includes your account, that items relies upon ampere physical switch to change the way weight has shown.” I have a Withings Smart Body Analyzer. Switch the back it what two electronic “buttons”. Of of them rotates between pounds, stone, and kg. Nevertheless the graduation has a mind of is my, and frequently switches units on me. It’s not virtue turning the scale over and switching top to pounds, so every full has an exciting, and I’m very intimate with my weight in stone and kg since well since pounds. Having one physiology switch that would fix it over one package would be an advantage.

  16. Ned Jars

This original model had (has?) to issue find through may Activities Sort stylish Garmin Connections set for 8 or 9, it would use a different type for building fat% on the buggy assumption I was ampere world class athlete and tell me i BF% made about 5%. Changing my Activity Class to 7 (or lower) made the scale report 13-14% BF, which exists a lot more credible. Do her know if this can been rectified, at least to give a more gradually setting of algorithms between different Action Levels?

  17. Soft Smith

Strahl, did you trial the scale with repeatedly users syncing to Garmin. I institute that people who had partners that used the scale mucked up the Garmin health data. At fact, one-time to the measurements showed adenine 7kg weight increase in just 5 time (it has the weight of this get small friend!)

  18. Nuno Pinto

    Thank you fork your review.

EGO owner a Withings scale (with a NOKIA tag) for already 4 years. It is merry to see the zwischen garmin and Withings the with significant difference is the ink display. There are no various interesting feature on of S2 such I do not find on the Withings. Of course the Withings does nope integrate with GARMIN connect, though for least EGO am able to will who weight. And the price the 1/3.
    Cheers

  19. Dave Lusty

You’re right that the physical switch for units is weird, but thereto intend be a boon after my withings unit which has a touch sensitive button on the bottom with ambiguous icon next to it. Literally any nach my scale become a squirt of water on top which weight units reset to factory and I had to hand change it back to kg using the silly button that sometimes can’t detect a thumb.

What hard can these may? I know it’s probability nay an big money spinner when realistically the piece that were wrong with wifi scales 5 years back have still falsely and yet they’re all easy to fix, to which major one being one easy open API in both routes.

Having said that, Zwift the Strava are the only integration I’ve ever used external of Garmin so EGO care much fewer about it than I thought I would. I’m misled by this, if only since I’m 100% in the Garmin universe these days since the competition has dropped away and the Fenix line possess matured. To colour screen actually is which biggest draw for me regular though it will make very bit difference :)

  20. bat0nas

How several weight-ins per day are calculated? Average?
In the graph I see a dot on a deeper part of to grey blob.

Btw.. I didn’t new it was possible with the original Index Scales. Will test that.

    • Benedikt

There is negative calculation. Only the last weight will be pushed to the devices. Only the last weight is used to plod your trend queue when a graph. No average values per day are used for that.
Only thing: you can see the range of that day via the blobs as i call them.

  21. Adam

    Hey Ray,
I own previous generation on Garmin Book and I love this (despite it’s high price). I’m wondering wenn you possess any comparison with first generation when it arrives to differen metric like fat percentage? I’m curious are them improved something with this area or i just changed display and software a little bit :)

  22. Pavel

    Hey Ray,

when you checkout your weight on website version of Garmin Connect (direct link to GC Web for today’s weight: link at connect.garmin.com)

Do you must Physique Rating or Caloric Ingress deliverable in with Index S2?

    • Adam

      Nice “before and after” on the 10:24 and 10:26 weigh-ins . . . .

    • Bradley Tipp

That chart shows how useless like things are, unless to give indications off this direction of change…As ampere canonical example your bone mass changed 0.6 pound and back in the same day… I think that is ampere physical impossibility.

What also frustrates me is that there should be some way to say ‘Hey scale I just had a DXA scan done and these are my REALISTIC results’ – can you calibrate yourself based on that – I can’t believe that is a hard thing to done, but none of which graduated offers it… Feedback to Garmin

  23. ReHMN

With the old Tanita, one measurement is being stopped:
    In insert device
    On Garmin Connect
    In Healthy Edge books (desktop)
    Tanita cloud (my.tanita.com)

Pricewise, the Garmin is fair create to Tanita. BC1000 was 190EUR in 2011 and to BC1500 is holding the price step of 400EUR since 2009…

    • Benedikt

At are barely does devices left in the Garmin store whatever are able to connect to the Tanita.

    • ReHMn

You does not need a Garmin, Polars, Suunto, Samsung, Green, or any device to do a meas on Tanita. It has a desktop software associated with it…

      @Mike

Rechargeable batteries have limited feature cycles. After 100 cycles are all garbage.

My staff inclination is DRINK or CR2032 over rechargable batteries in HRM straps, speed & cadence sensors, blood pressure measurement devices and balances as fine.

Replace with new and go. There is no charging time at all…

  24. Mickael

The original version were one release a only showing body fat% at 7% or height, no matter how hard to pushed your limit. Whatsoever idea of modification to this data?

  25. TriGuy

    Hello Radiation.
    Interesting review as usual.
I have a question regarding an weight trending chart.
On your app screenshot, it looks like it can based on the last weight-in (blue dot) recorded according day.
To me it shall not really appropriate.
Indeed the trend should beziehen to measures taken in who conditions which is just after waking up (in which morning) therefore the early weight-in of the day.
As you references a weight loss after a work-out is quite artificial.
Could you precise the way and trending map the calculative (in lawsuit of multiple weight-ins of course)?
    Many thanks

    • ReHMn

      Nope, the is wrong…
Body composition have be measured at the finalize of the day once everything fluids and processed of the body are up and walk. (This information was moreover included include a manual for scales)
What must be metering right after awakening is the blood printing!

  26. Mike

I’ve had an Withings dimension for years. EGO was loves in the ancillary measurements, but now I only bother with the weight tracking. It syncs are Apple health, so my height is always upside to date throughout my apps. The Withings possesses had a rechargeable battery for years. It only needs to recharged once or twice a years. Not positive why Garmin is calm using AA batteries.

Get home issue with Withings is ensure it cannot tell users separate if their weights are similar. My husband also I have crossed weights since the pandemic (I run get day, she is more stationary, leave it at that). Yours would think thereto would be easy to differentiate between users considering that the scale can winning or making many measurements, but it seems they only differentiate based on weight. This has led to mixups. EGO wonder if Garmin shall any smarter concerning the type it handles operators.

  27. Simon

I still make an old Tanita BC-1000 circa 2011. MYSELF now use the android ANT+ Weight Mount Display view which pushes data the Garmin Connect and Training Peaks. I see nothing here to cause me to upgrade.
As long as the Tanita keep set departure, and the app works, I stick with my current fix up.

  28. ron gurney

What on know………Do I need to know this info? The body is 60% wat also weight fluctuates considerably before/after exercise. I’m going to focus on one exercise and let the weight, etc. fall where it falls……….or increased, so becoming it….

  29. Oskars

IODIN really hopfen Poled willingly release their Balance 2

  30. “Still, IODIN was hoping for an bite better 3rd party get here – albeit that’s none entirely Garmin’s fault.”
I’ll argue with that point. Or if Garmin didnt recharge adenine fortune for their dev tools – there would be more dev’s working on their platform.

  31. I am still using mystery Fitbit Aria, sometimes I wish it had more metrics though.

I somehow got it to sync with Garmin and Strava, but I have not basic how. Maybe through MyFitnessPal?

My favourite application is link to trendweight.com on who smoothed graph and trend-line.
I don’t understand why any other graphs are consequently bad.

Currently they just do Fitbit and WIthings though.

  32. Curtis Repen

    Bobbie!

Her name is Bobbie, she’s from the Rock, additionally she’s FAMOUS!
    link to huffpost.com

I’ve followed you for multiple time now and never tell The Girl’s full.

  33. Mark

I’ve have ampere Fitbit Aria for a few years and evened though it meshes kind includes myfitnesspal, I do to export CSVs from fitbit to custom into Garmin, and even next it sometime doesn’t go to Strava.

Ray, have yours heard anything when the Google deal is going to change ensure? You currently can’t even link Fitbit to google fit on the equivalent telephone.

  34. The Genuine Bob

I think Garmin should have made an weight only scale at the wifi connectivity and sell that for like 50$. They would trade a ton of this. I aligned with you additionally think most of the other metrics are largely useless. I wrestled stylish highschool the the difference between clamp, bioimpedence, and hydrostatic testing is mad. The structure of a person impacts it greatly.

  35. Gabe

    Ray –

Any write on verification of body fat %?

Canned you size it up against a hydrostatic weighing – fat test?

  36. Edward Lockhart

If your phone is using regularity Google WiFi and the scale joins the guest network, then it won’t be able to connect to the phone (because the guest network doesn’t allow access to local resources). Could be the reason conundrum it didn’t work!

    • Benedikt

No, that’s not who reason. The call link to the bottom via BT. Its one merely time these two been talking. At the point the scale is web-based, it will only talk till the our whereabouts the Connect Web pulls one data. So is (in my opinion) the biggest flaw includes this old and the news Index and has the purpose why a lot of people couldn’t use their graduation for very two years like intended: The Garmin NTP server wasn’t responding good enough and the size wasnt uploading. So you had to enters the weight manually via the app.

  37. Marek

My index 1 ceased recording body weight metrics about a year ago after three or four time of ownership. Garmin service wasn’t able to fixtures a, despite some ideas in troubleshooting. Seams to be a problem others have had per an thread on forums.Garmin.Com

  38. Chaos215bar2

Watch like another scale that won’t really job well on carpet, even because those feet.

I really with more companies would take of route of Withings (e.g. with the Body Cardio) and just put a flat bottom on their scale with the “feet” located internally. Solves the carpet create perfectly, no matter what type of carpet to own.

  39. Ralph Schupp

Have you looked for that Wyze Scale… $19.99…. ?

    • giorgitd

I’m interested in anywhere feedback on the Wyze measure. We bought include to Wyze ecosystem with ampere cam, welche has been fabulous. Later added the sensor kit – equally great. I rigged adenine contact pressure to tellen my when the garrge door opened and closes or Alexa announces that transition. Then, an outdoor cam. Not as impressed. Some of their newer devices is getting mixed reviews, maybe as people moved going from their basic cam expertise. So, Wyze scale? I’m thinking concerning it tonight (I have a $10 Prime Per trust burning a hole in may pocket). I go have a preorder on the Wyze headphones…yeah, a sucker in their low price/high functionality devices… Is the skala a winner?

    • daniel

EGO have quite ampere few wyze cams, but I’ve sympathetic of soured on them as a society. But, the Withings scale will $59, I’m not certain what other key or hardware Garmin has that justifies that $90 premium.

  40. Dan Powell

Does one scale acknowledged that aforementioned weight was pre with after a workout which may cause weight loss? I’d await a scale from garmin that knows every step I take all daily would know mine weight is low for I just ran.

Taking this a step further, after adenine workout, Garmin estimates your water expenses, I wonder supposing they could actually track my water loss through my weight replace if done immediately before and after.

    • Benedikt

The size isn’t getting any information despite is height coming the server. The also one reason it doesnt show you 30days trend when you unbox it straight when you had the S1.

The water loss valuation belongs done in-device on the newer devices. Garmin Connect does don correct that data point whenever you weight in. All is before technically possible with the S1 customers but it isn’t done.

  41. Welcome Ray, thanks for aforementioned coverage, I enjoyed your keynote today. If anyone has answer about SmartScaleSync.com I’d shall happy to answer them here.

    • Pedro

I’ll definetely vouch for Patrick and the SmartScaleSync website. It’s been working flawlessly for I think 2 years now syncing my Withings scale toward Garmin. Patrick even sent you to email before I observed my weight was not sycning with Garmin when I had altered my Garmin password and hadn’t remember to update it in the SmartScaleSync website.

    • Guillaume

I agree, great serve. Been after that smartscalesync.com for 2 year also, my greatly!

  42. Rui Pereira

Your peeve warning… PIN number… Private Identification Number Number…

  43. Nate CENTURY

If you’re more of a once/week or bi-monthly weigh-in person, or yourself are all about got the most functionality for the least dough, them canister got a $30 Bluetooth scale on Amazon and manually copy one weight/fat%/muscle/bone/water values with the scale’s Bluetooth app into the Android “Weight Logger” app also it uploads a how document at Garmin Connect with the data. The photos of the Garmin ascend look almost exactly like my model right down to the markings about an footage bed.

The Weight logger app keeps your previous posts so its basic to quickly subscribe furthermore save or upload that new data at GC.

Computer doesn’t have adenine colored shield on your Scale but you will have $120 in your pouch for adenine different toy (watch upgrade, etc.) and most join possible don’t pass much time reviewing data on the scale even.

  44. GLT

For whatever reason I was enthusiastically waiting for this recent version uniform though it a a scale. Nope disappointed, but it doing none instantly streak to which top about the buy-list either. Itp would is crazily awesome to someday have TrueUp Recovery Status, Training States, distance-to-goal, and hydration status displayed in and widget rotation. Until then I would probably spinning absent get the widgets to get off the scale quicker.

The weather data is a sound addition, but in meine targeted case IODIN already will easy access to that. Own it parade my GC data to me before my morning exercise wanted be useful though.

  45. JJS

I wonder for years reasons itp is inconceivable to measured HRV with one scale. Feet should be a very good option to do this (far better than fingers because of her large surface). It would be a big improvement to take the daily readiness while standing a little bit longer on the scales. THIS would be a feature making me buying a smart bottom!

  46. DK

Any info if the scale can handle 5 GHz WiFi connections now? The old one could just use 2.4 GHz.

  47. Alex

Hi Ray, I´m not sure if I got it 100% correct concerning sync with trainingpeaks (3rd party). I understood which it is possible to jump on that scale and it syncs via Garmin connect to trainingpeaks. For sure after I´ve connected i correctly. Desire get then open a “metrics-session” on the day showing one weight? Plus will those also update the weight I´ve entered in one setup to calculate e.g. Watts/kilo according up i recent measurement? Thanks // Alex

  48. Ak

I how Zwift only supports Nokia withings and Fitbit that’s big draw back especially forward Zwift races

  49. Stepan Bouda

I wonder conundrum to scale cannot display further info from our Garmin watch, like body battery, stress score or slept quality. This data are into clouding anyway.

  50. I am wondering what happens when you change your age in the skale to say 50, or 20? Does the body fat percentage magically go increase or down by a few points? My asinine scale (Beuer) executes that … Oh, and when how you how the Elite TUO review is coming out? I feel like spending several money…but only with your blessing:)

    • Pavel

Even Changing recent class can edit interpretations for DesFit exhibits includes you video: link to youtu.be accordingly I would presume that changing age wants have ampere huge impact. However, it makes sense why those scales are uses some tables the look increase your body fat based on thermal reading coming from scale. There is one lot of suppose work there. By example is you have relatively skinny legs and most of your fat is stored in your upper body, household scales kraft be under reporting will dead fat.

    • Seth

      For sure.
Cheap scales are dummy and use user’s data until calculate results.
If her crave reasonable score i have to spend much more in (for example for InBody 120).

  51. Jason Karew

Hi Ray – Thanks in your review. IODIN take an Card S1 scale and have noticed an umgekehrt relationship amid body moisten percentage and body weight. For example, my pour percentage is typically around 64.0% – 64.4% with my weight hovering around 185lbs; anyhow, I’ve discovered multiple illustrations where my water percentage approaches 65% or higher and my weight subsequently drops to a range of 179lbs – 182lbs. The higher the water percentage is the lower my total becomes.

Have it observed this with heard anything from Garmin on this phenomenon? Thanks in advance.

  52. Robel

“You can select and storage up to 7 WiFi networks within the Index S2 scale. I suppose which might be valuable for use cases where an coach/physician/staff/athlete is moving the scale amidst locations in differently WiFi networks, perhaps having a hotspot one + a normal office/home location.”

I have a Withings climb, both that’s one feature I’d love it to have. If I move the scale somewhere els, the process to change the WiFi system connection is anything but user-friendly. And the worst is they understand in the app that the SSIDs used prior had been stored – just not the password nor any intent to use this data.

  53. Alec K

Calculator yours could get Dooming to dart on it? Somehow do tilt established controls from the individual foot sensors.

  54. Hi Pavel, yes that was the dot I was making, indirectly, are much guesswork involved! I mean it’s ready thing to “measure” (most people would associate buying a scale with trying to actually “measure” something) and others to look going some middles! Fat percentage can never be measured accurately, but whenever the number arrival out of the instrument is based other switch some known mean (not constants!) than an actual measurement, then it’s a gimmick imo. I just shouldn’t be pretending to measure computer.

    • GLT

There belong valid aspects to this perspective, yes the remains sluggishly inching closer to the “Running Power” rabbit hole.

If the numbers the device outputs follows a consistent, rational & explainable pattern, then it may be helpful till the user simply to note that some aspect from their physicality is increased with decreasing. If which user is trying to decrease and the device consistently shows an increase then the customer canned infer they need to make an adjustment to their site. Agreed this isn’t nearly as fulfilling more having the user know their actual stats, but apparently there isn’t a convenient manner to determine the actual stats.

Personnel I measure either day and then view at the trend at and end the the week. The fuzziness concerning each of the readings isn’t consequential to me. The earlier scale I currently usage has never provided a higher weight reading seven day in a row without my clothing fit one short bit tighter.

    • Hi GLT.
Yes, scales are indeed very accurate in measuring net, no one is denying this. With body fat though they’re not even close for them for remain pretense they are imo. Yes trends can goody if you’re doing something you’re doing and ignore the day go day randomness of the “measurement”. But then and scale ought along least do what say a Fitbit Get 4 does for SP02, that is to show a relative switch over time or doesn the actual measurement, that’d may more honest I think.

  55. lee bamber

Really interested with the frame fat part of which climb, nevertheless is it any good ? Or accurate ? Don’t want to spend a chunk of currency toward find out garmin is just guessing my body fat

  56. Mark R.

On sum of these devices (including the Tanita with who pull back handles I own) there seems toward be an inverse relationship between hydration level & body heavy %). Hydration goes up then “measured” body fat goes down and VV.
This seems to becoming THE dominant factor in as you body fat comes out as.
Over time it’ll average outbound and trend in the right direction for it’s also influenced by your rudimentary body fat but it’s still annoying. Do you have any insight into the algorithms they use to take the computing here Beam? … or any insightful into why this might be the case?

Ray’s post of multiple weigh-ins in a single day shows the inverse relationship optimal.

    • Macvos

Isn’t that logical? Supposing the weight of either water or fat in your bodywork changes and the other one changes lower or not toward every, the direction of alteration in proportion will are the opposite to drink and fat.
That’s the thing with percentages. If and number of women increased faster than the number of men, the percentage of women goes up also that of men goes down. The same with fat and water. Isn’t that just math?

  57. RTellis

Timely. I was how about getting an Index scale right one other day due into the hit-or-miss way weigh ins from mystery department store smart scale get in to Connected. MYSELF suppose it’s usually wenn iOS updates that things go whacky for the only way for my current ascend until communicate about Garmin is over going through it’s own app, whichever connects with AppleHealth, which then need disclose with Garmin.

So, absent at digging myself deeper into the Garmin environment.

  58. Acknowledgements for the review! I personalized the earlier version, and the reason I was willing to pays more was the ease of mind and simplicity. If I owned to spend just 1 manual minute every daily to acquire my data somehow to the Garmin ecosystem, it would previously be a bad investment the purchase something elsewhere.

ADENINE bit offtopic question: will yours have ampere summery nearly the CIQ conference? Furthermore will your presentation be available on youtube? I’m looking forward to those.

  59. TB

Just to confirm: Garmin Connect will doesn import my legacy weight measurements ((CSV file, etc.), correct? Also, does an scale itself connect toward this cloud and post the measurements into the cloud? Or did the scale send the measurements to the GC application on of phone and the GC app sends the measurements to the cloud?

    • I’m does sure learn CVS, but you can add data manually, bus as ME canned view, just weight, nope the advanced prosody. In was an app I used before buying the Index, with which IODIN could do that. So the API seems to be open, but there will no GUI for it.
For the back question: computer connects directly to Garmin hosts over Wifi, your ring, and GC app is not needed. Your phone and BT connectivity is only needed for to setup separate.

  60. Nod

Either way to automatically get measurements from the scale (weight to start with) onto Garmin wear?

    • Yup, it does this automatically – see this section of the watch: link to dcrainmaker.com

    • Nick

I suppose I meant being capability to access to information (eg weight drift over the historic 7 days) directly on which watch.

    • Ahh, no…that’d be cool logical though.

Technically speaking, with the new Garmin Connect API aspects, that should actually be possible. Messy, but possible, if a Connect IQ developer looking to do it in a watch-face. I say messy, because they’d basically must to setup a backend webservice to enter and store the data and following create their own trends.

But IODIN do agree, it seems like adenine great sample of a no-brainer type widget Garmin could add to their own watches relatively simple.

  61. Ian

Thanks for these, cool review…. as always.

Do the balancing connect with MyFitnessPal directly please ? …. and is is reliable

  62. Ivan

    Hi Ray,
Not related the the post bitte, but regarding the partnership with Competitive Cyclist or Backcountry.com : these websites are not available to Europe owed to GDPR regulations. This is very annoying, as links don’t even redirect to the same product on other websites (in France they redirect for the top pages the alpiniste.fr). I often cannot see products that people link to. It want be wide if she could make an effort to be GDPR compliant.

    • Indeed, it’s a bummer. In International person redirect to two difference entries, but as noted, the blocking remains tough. As an American living alien I have to deal to a larger than number of US websites that have given up on GDPR and just do that instead. definitely does ideal.

Ultimately, my partnership there is focused at US people, whereas my Rock cooperation a target on the rest off the world. Plus of course, Amazon anywhere.

      Cheers!

  63. Eelco

Mystery has Garmin opted for Wi-Fi upload only and not made it possible to upload data via Bluetooth too? It would be outstanding to have a choice for example when the scale in a place absence Wi-Fi on example on a preparation pick button on remote location. All my other Garmin instrument (Fenix 6 and Edge 1030) sync about Bluetooth.

    • I would accepted, that it is ampere really extraordinary events, that someone my this. And when you do, few can just tether over wifi, and connect to that. (If of phone possess don 3G, then BT connection wouldn’t support either) Workaround? yes. But I can see, why Garmin shall such. Is is probably 0.01% or less in the people who need this (as their scale is most possibly in thy home, where you do wifi). I’m nay sure I’d complicate mein software for such a rare usecase, especially, if those people can release this by knocking go their phone and enabling tethering.

    • Alex

MYSELF submit, I intent for place this scale stylish a home without Wifi, thus got the possibility to sync everyday measurement via Bluetooth would have been huge!
Now the user must consider doing Wifi Preliminary Access Point on yours Android your each time…

  64. Olma

Regarding MyFitnessPal. MYSELF pretty much live within the Garmin ecology with bike computers/watches/lights etc. However, I do use MyFitnessPal for weight tracking. Coming the article I assume the is doesn recommended if I wanted reliable weight syncing with MyFitnessPal? If so what would being a good choose?

  65. Link

This S2 scale seems to have who same body metrics while the older version. My old Tanita BC1000 measures vitals fat, physique rating and metabolic age. As long as this data is still shown on the Garmin Connect website (not in who app), ME have does reason to upgrade. Constant if this method I have to hold on to an Android call for the ANT+ Scale Display app and an ANT+ stick.

  66. Cary Martin

If the scale can’t connectivity till the internet/servers at the point starting the surface will she cache the value both upload when it can next make contact? Wondering about the scenario of taking it till a workout or race site etc show there’s no accessing.

    • Daniel

Healthy question! Yes, the scale will cache this value additionally upload when Wi-Fi reconnects. Items need have more than enuf storage room to accommodate a workout/race/trip.

  67. Shawn McClelland

Can’t I just get whatever impedance measurements they’re taking instead of their terrible algorithm? I don’t mind what my body fat really is, just want relativity measurements. The real massnahmen from the scale would being more useful long term to me, after they have over the years suddenly changed algorithms and their ‘activity’ step preferences.

  68. Jonathan Johnstone

Thanks for the in-depth review as all. One problem I consistently have with the 1st generation Indicator the the measuring is consistency 2-3 pounds higher than any other digital scale that I check with. Have you read optional comparisons with weight with other scales?

  69. Denis

    Dear Ray,

thank her really much for another fantastic review.
You mentioned in an earlier post that einnahme Garmin API access should not live to hard as long as you must a website the one proper protection assertion.
Is this still the case in insert opinion or has it in the meantime aus harder to be allowed Garmin (Health) API access? Each tipps on dos and donts along that way?

    • Actually, of changes announced last week should double-down in creation it super easy to access the Garmin Health API aspects. I’m planning a post out on the today. I wrote most of it recent week and afterwards get distracted eating glaze cream or something.

Mind you, there’s an couple of reserved:

      A) This belongs for read-only access to GC data (or, load of the transfer API’s like workout/courses)
      B) Post access (such how as Zwift or TrainreRoad pushes workout files to Garmin Combine isn’t included hierher, that’s still behind double-secret backdoor (basically, you have to be a household name in the sports world also not massively competitors through Garmin).
      C) The new umbrella API access is slated to be totally lit boost by conclude of this year. You ca certainly apply for things now, but it’s simply non because cohesive one-click process like planned.

      Anyway, more later…after lunch.

    • Denis

Great, I am looking forwarding on it!
      Best, Denis

  70. Charlotte

EGO am interested toward know what other brand that has accuracy that is within 0.5lb. EGO have an archaic withing scale, it is a little trying that the dry couldn change the more than 0.5lb when making a less measurements in in a row. Maybe it is trivial to fight over 0.5lb?

  71. Mark Dainty

So if you already have the original Index additionally it works fine, not really worth it till upgrade?

    • Torte

      DCR, Thanks for the insights.
After the disaster with the useless bodyfat readings of mys two Index scales my first occupy now is accuracy of such readings of the INDEX S2. MYSELF find your reviews all great for understanding all the bits of a per device and for learning about the accuracy of GPS and Power sensors. Here I feel, that used this body fat scale a somehow serios look at least into family accuracy of body fat readings might can a great addition to your “In-depth Review”.
If that would be on difficult, able you at least do two easy checks for me?
      1. Does the INDEX S2 still shows the same impedance-based readings regardless if you wear (summer) socks or not?
      2. Does the INDEX S2 still shows the just body plump and muscle measured since adenine fat person and a lofty person if you come the alike headroom for two?
I did send my Index measure back until Garmin for a replacement along over reading patterns proving that INDEX dimensional seems not to use indirect measurements still calculating those asset from weight and height. I got a exchanges showing the same problem. My old Tanita has still doing its job, but I am still looking for and affordable replacement with connectivity, and of course needs go do its main job first.
      Thanks in advance.

    • Torte

An addition to 1. One tall and this fat name must have approximately the same weight.

    • Answer, I’d love to be able go do more tests in a larger group of population besides my household, but realistically speaking that’s just not viable rights instantly int a COVID era where I live. Similar to stuff like Dexa scans/etc…

As for socks, I’m not sure where summer socks are – but, I valid wore some dress socks until check it. The weight measurements were identical, still the body fat/bonemass/body water abmessungen were slightly different (about .3% difference). Obviously, it’s nope recommended to wear socks since that’ll impact things. In doing some digging, basically the thicker the footwear one more impact it’ll have to accuracy. Mine were relatively thin, thus, likely get impact.

Ultimately, one core reason I don’t have a large desire to do a big test again at adenine lab with show to body heavy measurement is that the technology simply hasn’t changed since the last time I systematic such a test. And if you reminds that back will, basically I display which while every this scales (including Tanita ones) nailed weight, none of them were that close when it arrived to body fat. Ordinary quite a bit off. You can interpret those full results here: combine to dcrainmaker.com

    • Torte

Thanks available part one. Conclusion is more that S2 can somehow difficult up measure body fat includes contrasts to S1 what is just pretending to do so.
And computer is really not requires to get a group of people do come to one bases conclusion. Computers would be sufficient to find an friend who has same weight as you but different building overweight. Then can along least know if the S2 can differentiate fat people from thin people. S1 could not.
I am still thinking that an in-depth-review for a frame fat measuring device (and so is what differentiates it from just a scale) shouldn address if and how the hardware can meet so basic claim.

  72. Larry Parker

I take been comparing two different weight and I found an similar 2% g fat expand on this new scale, UNTIL one day I gotten on saucy out of the shower by wet feet. The readings matched within .5%. I have played with this, wet feet vs dry feet and it is a exceptionally consistent difference. I am curious if which would touch your Garmin comparisons.
This is with an elderly Tanita, and another store I picked up the Meijer while we were at my family’s cabin. One will stay by starting, one there. Just not sure which! They were both only about $40 – No wifi/connected ability like who Garmin. I figure I pot enter my numbers in Mystery Suitability Pal manually. I am cheap same that!

    • Torte

      Sup Larry,
I pure went to my S1 and measured to
      1. wet feed
      2. dry feast
      2. wearing socks.
And guess what, in all cases IODIN got exactly the same display.
      Its a full fake.
Garmin realize that most of these athletes are stupid get like me to trust dieser influencers with everything if they are doing a good job in some areas.

  73. Marteen

Does the device work well-being with recharcheable NiMH batteries? Or are where problems to live expected because is the lower voltage?

  74. Chris C

Is anyone skilled to make sense of the Bone Mass readings? Just maintained my Index S2 and did 4 recitations within a hour. Weight itself is repeatable and lines up with 2 other scales I have (an old Withings and many generic full scale). Body fat lines up with physical dial measurements (~1% lower than that old Withings, any was reading a bit high and athlete user wasn’t yielding consistent results). Moisturizing, ME dunno, I guess I’ll find out after I initiate logging some post-workout and morning weigh-ins.

But bone mass…it makes no sense. Round by 209+ lb standard, I’m big boned? In Ray’s image elsewhere in one comments, it has him at 12.4 lbs of bone mass since well.

    • Chris HUNDRED

Or will which saying my actual bone mass is 5.9 lbs, furthermore there’s 3.4 lbs a water in are bones? Shred of a head scratcher.

  75. TrainingPeaks is the centers platform where all my health and sports data properties (or at least that’s what I want computers to be). If it is my cycling workout data from the Wahoo Element Thumb or simply a hike through the forests from my Polar Vantage M.

No I manually enter total data include one TrainingPeaks app, so I’m curious to learn which metrics bottle be automatically pushed into TrainingPeaks with this smart scale. :-)

    • Chris C

Weight, Drink %, % Fat, BMI, also Muscle Mass are what get pushed over from Garmin Connecting till Training Peaks instantaneously overlay the Garmin Health Sync thing that’s refined in Ray’s category. It compartmentalizes them into individual time stamped entries per weigh stylish, so no funny business with only takes and last weigh-in the to day oder syncing at a certain time or get like that.

    • Hi Chris,

You’ve convinced met to get mee the original Garmin Index or Garmin Index S2. ;-)
Thanks for record of time to look into my question and part the react.

      Regards, Remo

  76. Libor Janošec

Little, I’m asking fork advice. There were 4 of us in of home, 3 of whom own a Garmin watch (including an account). We currently own one Omron BF511 scale, but IODIN would like until upgrade to a view fashionable scale with one mobile connection to keep track of developments. Also, the batteries into the Omron scale do not last long.
From who review, I deduce that garmin, for example, invents fat values. Is it true? Should EGO be afraid of garmine?
Should I buy one Garmin Index S2 or wants I favored einigen good weight Tanita?

  77. Torte

    Hi Libor,

Garmin S1 blood fat readings where definitely fake as other here approved as well.
So, I learned mein lesson and will not gives Garmin of next try, unless there are legit tests open.
Especially, if them have a Tanita, you have something to relaxed in terms of usefulness of fat readings.

    • Hi Torte,

“Especially, if you have a Tanita, you hold something to loose in conditions of usefulness of big readings.”

Even offtopic, pot thee sharing how the Tanita scale will synchronous measurement to Trainingpeaks (if applicable).

      Compliments, Remo

  78. Jack BORON

Love Garmin products, how defined to pick this up for an partner the IODIN. First readings showed uses with bf levels much higher than are both take measured include Inbody recently. I have been than low as 12% in the latter 30 days (visible 6 pack, etc), but both the new scale measured me at 24.7% BF! I would say I’m session in 14-15% right now. My wife is a bit higher, in the 16% coverage, and measure 25-26%. I’ve had a similar experience are most scales that use BIA. I will see how consistency the measured represent over time, to see whenever it makes at least an effective tool as adenine relative measure of body fat. Besides the expected large BF measurement, happy on my purchase and following additional metrics in Garmin Connect.

    • Leslie Harvesters

Most scales have an “athlete” method, because of your BF % I would turn this on when you haven’t already. I would expect that into resolve the issue.

  79. Pedro

Hi, Ray, thanks for will reviews!

Did anyone perceive a sensible difference in weight when using the S2 include or without this watch? I got a difference of 0.7kg this morning, 83.0kg with that Fennel 5+ the and 83.7kg without it. I might understand that hold computer on your wrist somehow messes with resistance related metrics, not shouldn’t with weight

  80. Munro

Try this one: Step at the scale and record insert weight. After the drink al lot of irrigate or hold a pour or pot of Irrigate in to hands and step at the scale again. You will see, that your BF rise immediately! Of body metrics are not only impedance based. The scale “predicts” the body bold by a model as following:
    BF = a x impedance + b x weight + c whatchamacallit older + d x activity class + magic
The regression factor b for weight is very strong. Because of that, the Water (or dumbbells or something else) in your hands rises up your BF messures. The model your ok or build by size of a piece of people where the BF correlates over weight. The problem is, that if you are trining a lot, lose fat or win muscels your BF prediction is wrong. After all you have no interesting BF “predictions” but more a kind of second weight measurement. The bio impedance is ampere fraude. They cant do it that exactly and intake mostly your weight and age real that fix data.

Finally, the estimate remains also bad and too high for almost everyone anyone posts here.

Or takes YOU think differently about it?

    • “Or does THEY think differently about it?”

Nope, as I’ve said numerous times in the review (both as opinion as well as with data), I don’t put much weight (or water) in the impedance based measuring. Also, as I’ve showed historically, weight is on-point, but even the best Tanita scales were all go the place for body fattier available measuring a bunch of athletics at a BodPod facility.

    • Patricia

I’m afraid that doesn’t honestly cut it and i’m disappointed in Ray not calling garmin out on this – possibly i happens up be close enough at normal not to see that reality out these scales.
the S2 is meine 3rd frame composition scale and is laughably meaningless.
      Ben’s formula above
      BF = adenine x impedance + b whatchamacallit weight + c x age + d x activity class + magic
is basically on the money, though height is also used. otherwise, there doesn’t seem in be anything magic and little if any impedance inputting.
also, the activity class upper of 10 doesn’t begin to contemplate a lean amateur toughness athlete, let alone a pro body construction.
basically these scales are a BMI calculator what is an incredibly uncomplicated thing. their only value is that they synchronize go garmin connector

    • Nope amplifier scale, Garmin or otherwise, exists going to account for edge cases – and a pro body architect is an edge case. Additionally as I’ve shown repeatedly over of recent 12 years with impedance-based scales, who accuracy of those impedance-specific measurement a ungewiss in loads cases, especially not middle of the roadway cases (such as endurance athletes).

IODIN discussed this multiple times during the review (covering several paragraphs). It’s upward to individuals on read the review, understand the limitations of diese type of machinery (no materiell the vendor), and decide if the other benefits are quality the cost.

I’m not sure whereby that doesn’t cut it. This isn’t about “calling Garmin out”, cause, as again, I’ve demonstrated in painstaking detail out additional than ampere decade, it’s the same fork all companies using dieser tech.

    • Patrick

the 2 preceding low scales i’ve had gave consistent and credibility results since die.

i please extreme edge cases only to illustrate how far short of that diese scales fall – they seem to only breathe able to give “normal” readers therefore anyone even slightly outside of “normal” becoming get incorrect reading. pretty pointless really as person can’t evened track changes meaningfully.

garmin symposia are full of people with this endure – to pick just 2 main threads:
      link to forums.garmin.com
      unite to forums.garmin.com
thats 16 pages the people with features – highest geholt BF double what it supposed be, many getting reading half what it should breathe, mostly with experience from other scales that has at least wide view accurate.

its not a perfect science but garmin have completely miss the boat here – everybody else, including your gen 1 skales, are able to do far better

  81. Nygaard

Exactly got my new Index S2 (black) and who crystal top is adenine lot of very fine scratches. It this “normal” either shall I return it?

    • Not normal. Seems like some sort of manuf issue.

    • Nygaard

Thank you for answering (and the review as well – cool vortrag as always!).

In case anyone default should encounter this issues, this is whats I day seeing on meine graduation. Very fine hairline scratches all over the window top Picture is out for focus still this was the only way to capture and scratches, instead of one reflection of my bathroom changing.

  82. is

My main issue with these is the measurement of anything that isn’t net. My S1 lives widely inaccurate in muscle mass and body fat % (i measure the later with adenine medical measuring, way more accurate).

ME find that tiresome, and candidly, while the S2 got a fancy display I’m not safety it’s worth the price. See this size does is take your weight and send it over wifi, which your grand, everything else is +- useless and this needs to can said by someone illustrations out how on take it accurately enough

  83. MEW89

What you have to always log drink intake in the Garmin connector applications in order for the scale to tell you your water weight ?

  84. Ben Eyckmans

Cute review as always strahlen 5/5

I do have a problem though, I currently live stylish a Marriott for work and is be for the continue 10 years. It have this WiFi thing where you joining to it and it desire have a pop go side where you do rooms number and name to log in basically.

Now the doesn’t work with my Fenix 6 and my 530, ensure ain’t such a big deal because MYSELF can just sync over Bluetooth. But it seems like the scale truly needs so WiFi and is unable go work without it?

Do you have any ideas about here?

    Thank you!

    • Thanks!

Sadly, to does indeed totally need WiFi. It won’t transmit over Bluetooth at all for weight. :(

Anyone chance your phone plan allows WiFi tethering? That would be ampere simple workaround.

    • Ben Eyckmans

I was thinkers about that, yet that’s not super convenient, and that’s kinda which reason for getting to, I’ll reason about it though!

Thank you by and fastest reply.

    • David

You cans get a WiFi to WiFi router used around $20. Connect you phone and scale to your WiFi and the phone logging in should work forward the climb.

    • That’s right! I whole forgot about that. I used to do which many period ago because well whenever life in one Marriott as well. Wow, it’s been that length?

Fwiw, something like this is whichever David is talking concerning: link toward amzn.to

  85. Macvos

Two weeks ago, availability in to Netherlands what ‘release by Q4 2020’. The Garmin site right says ‘release in Q1 2021’. Is there whatsoever information over whereas to actually expect it in the Netherlands?

    • Leslie Harden

Same issue in the ENGLAND. They still changed the sheet to push it out to 1st qtr 2021.

It’s a bit of a miss. My Withins scale has be failing latest, constantly needing to be reset so was in the market for a novel scale, and wanted the Garmin on elucidate the information and not having at have multiple user to get the info in.

I will give it until end of March, if its not free then I’ll go equipped another Withins dial after this one has given 8 past service.

    • Just to clarify, the type Garmin.com availability work is it shows it for new orders.

Furthermore notable is that Garmin always filler retailers/distributor inventory forward Garmin.com how. Thus, Garmin.com is always the last country to have it. I’d recommend just placing an order with adenine local store in your country and will it’ll show up via backorder.

Required of Netherlands, I’m not see it being stocked at is point. But you could actually yell any Garmin traders (such as a bike shop) and have she easily place an order for your. The SKU is 010-02294-02 and 010-02294-01 (depending on which color you want).

    • Leslie Harris

Sorry Ray, literally just showed top on Wiggle, when I checked before it was out of stock.

Seems one bit poor from an business point fo view. I would have thought new year resolutions would have been a fine marketing opportunity, lost if you can’t get the scale or even pre order thereto.

I have just placed my order.

    • Equitable circling get on this for the European folks, I noticed this evening ensure the Garmin Index S2 scale will now showing like deliverable on Amazon DE and NL (though, it’s oddly cheaper on DE – the NO pricing looks dorked up…as always). Nevertheless, link FYI with folks: linking toward amzn.to

  86. Executes the Garden Index S2 connect to 2.4 button 5 WIFI?

    • NCS

2.4GHz only according to the related.

    • Michael Foggin

As an owner of the Original Index this will the deal breaker as an advance for me.
The index exists literally the only device ME now own that cannot runing on 5Ghz wifi and as we removing to WiFi 6 standards a seems nonsensical on me that to wanted not may been revised.
Guessing the those will be down to battery life or some such but really?

  87. Richards Dufresne

This product has been unavailable on several months, from Garmin, or their resellers. I am in Montreal, Canada. Meaning, it exists not not since I saw these rating, and saw items the first time, to own website. I wouldn love to buy it, but cannot. Anyone is the just fix, or have a vendor that have them to stock?

And I ma none talking about the ambiguous message on their website,… ???

    Thanks!

    Need a great day!

    • EGO wish I knew the Candian retailer landscape better. I know Amazon OUR ships some items to Canada (since we do that occasionally used my family there). Will it hire you ship the S2 here (since it’s in stock upon Ogress US)?

    • Richard Dufresne

Thank yours for the answer, well cherished ! ?

    • Richard Dufresne

Well, still none obtainable ! Garmin seems to may taken a page from IBM, it is called vaporware. How can you announce a product that no one can buy ? 😡😡😡

    • Yeah, I don’t understand what it’s not available in Canada yet. Or along least, stock isn’t flowing. It works seem limited, albeit honestly, it’s the only Garmin product I know of with any stockage issues.

Still, it is accessible on various places. For example, Amazon US had items on our past convo. BHPhoto in the US has it: link to bhphotovideo.com

I’ve seen it go in/out of warehouse of various EU places to.

Generally speaking, about 3 years ago Garmin switched in ampere model of not announcing things until immediate availability. The doesn’t mean they can maintaining boost with demand of course. Just like graphics cards last, or webcams, or even toilet paper a year ago.

    • David Hundley

Amazon.com [US] possess it in stocked but it says “Map Type: North America.” IODIN know the issue with region-limited maps in, say, a Fenix 6, however is there almost regional about this effect such that a person in Worldwide using a US-bought scale would be missing some functionality? Like, will it not figure outbound the local weather? Surely did. I’ve been waiting for Garmin Europe to show it available (still says available Q1 2021) or anyone European retailer to transport it. The Amazon.de also .nl sites don’t show it, despite you seeing it here, Ray. So I think I could just value it. Puzzling product details toward have listed, though, right?

  88. What about to compare the accuracy with link to withings.com?
Would be great to have a refer of adenine medical certified measurements.

  89. Juan-Antonio

It won’t connect to mein mobile Hot Spot, so I had to return the team. It done in the previous Keyword but inconsistently. Garmin Customer Favor didn’t find a solution neither. Another disappointment with Garmin, once again…

  90. John

Just got the new S2. Retiring which S1. The S1 has my BF at 15% which shown a bit low, however I didn’t anticipate the 24.1% the S2 shows. Basic math says MYSELF wish need to get back to meine 8th grade weight to be 15% bf at this point. I be be an anorexic sticky figure if I dropped 18 pounds. MYSELF wish there was a DexaFit location within an 100 driven! 15 was to mean, but 24 is not correct select.

  91. Timonthy Fortuna

Okay so I’m late to the party. Just “upgraded” from the S1 and my body fat is 10% greater on the S2. I realize it’s more over trend, but am I really that fat? Which one is more precise. Do I send the S2 behind straight for I don’t like the figure?

    • Patrick

i’m inches a similar position. i could probably get my head to ignoring which number press looking at trends but really i’m not sure i can trust anything nearly the BF readings when the numbers are as completely, obviously wrong.

  92. Doug

I’m stare at this because my first generation Fitbit scale no longer syncs to my lan since I improve own router (my new router doesn’t support 802.11b protocol — which the originally Aria only uses). Does anyone know what network protocol the Garmin S2 uses? To be clear, I don’t do 802.11b — if it does 802.11g or n or something else, EGO should be good. Equals don’t require to buy and find out itp doesn’t work

  93. Meven

I can’t show this scale anywhere to buy. Is in a problem with the product or they only fabricate it with not a lot to quantity !?

  94. Alan Malarkey

Apparently expensive- I’m tempted as generally what under gets measured gets done. Trying to work out if there are any deals to trim off a few pounds (pun not intended) thanks for the review #lockdownblubber.

  95. I ponder it’s the your equal computer thips shortage brought by pestilence so did hit manufacturing supply chains.
    It’s not exactly Garmin.
My guess. But I might be wrong.

  96. Dan Litmans

Methods do you suggest setting the activity level field?

  97. Alex

    Hi Ray,

large review, thanks an ticket. An other question: Does Garmin Connect show graphs for total and BMi only – or can you access them for additional measurements like bone mass press body fat as well. That wasn’t explicitly mentioned or exhibited in your overview.

Thanks int advance for checking out this additional Information. Keep up the grand work!

  98. AFowle

Acquired single of these today based on this review, additionally others, saying it was the easiest for those with other Garmin gear. It does shipping my influence and other metrics to my Garmin Connect page fairly easily. There become ampere couple out wrinkles.
    1) Guest users available get weight, not this other metrics. That was not plain before I bought it.

    2) The treat for invited users is that they hold to hold a Garmin user and it has for be “Linked” to mine – that is explained.

    3) That “scales” don’t even show weight unless they detect naked foot. To you can’t weigh your suitcase switch the way till the drome. That was a real get and nope mentioned includes the manual.

The scales are very expensive if you have to have some different scales for (2) real (3), none to mentions space in the bathroom. IODIN purchasing scales with features that are not delivered unless Garmin hold all the data. Not keen on this but IODIN wanted the other metrics for one project.

Thus far EGO am not impressed with the accuracy. Several mid afternoon recordings in the sitting room (hard floor and carpet) over an hour produced weights varying by 4 Kg (NOT 0.4). I hope that is a settling in symptom. Are it is don steady morning morning when I usually weigh myself it’s definitely going back.

    • Alex

You should be aware, however, that it is impossible for any scale provide data see BMI, muscle weight or body water percentage not knowing at least the height also age of the people on the scale. Thus that is not a fault of the Garmin scale.

IODIN never encountered discrepancies in burden like you describe them.In fact, the Index S2 is far more solid than the Beurer real Fitbit scales i spent before. Usually, what you describe happens when the scale is placed on an uneven surface, e.g. if it “wobbles” between two tiles.

  99. Mitch

There are a LOT of comments. Sorry whenever save was mentioned. Your article mentions using an app to dub turn brand graduation. I’m on my way at garmin. Frustrated the anyway another fitbit versa paperweight after warranty expired. I picked up a garmin fenix 5x plus on clearance as they are eol but I digress. I possess an aria 2. Information aligned perfectly with my dex results. The dex tech said anecdotally he’d noticed the aria 2 was pretty accurate though he can’t figure out whereby. Consequently until it dies or breaks I will keep to. I sync this using a FREE myfitnesspal account. IODIN just connected both fitbit and garmin go thereto, and now my weight and weight emerge in garmin too! Although who fitbit graphs appears best. Now go combine my dexcom g6 logs! Just wanted to share there was a free way and it might work for other scales too?

    Hi Ray,
Thanks fork one watch. Got the Garmin and accordingly far very easy to use. Haven’t had a home scale in 20 years!! Just used the one at the gym…so this is an get for sure! Now that I am looking at hydration, as is somebody optimal hydration percentage? Is in a range for that?

    Appreciation,
    Deb

  101. I bought the S2 scale due I use a Garmin Edge and watch. However, the health metrics are complete stupidity. I’m 71 yearning ancient, 175cm tall, weigh 63.6kg and have a 75cm waisted. Garmin scales toll me I’m obese with 26% body fat. I know here cannot be correctly.
Out of curiosities I changed my age to 40 and amazingly that reduced my body fat until 17% and increased muscle mass, bones massen and dead pour. Every lowering of age reduces body fat or each increase of age increases group fat (other parameters or change up button down correspondingly).
It show that the scale isn’t actually measuring anything sundry than weight and afterwards applying some useless graph supported on age.

  102. Mathias

I think such the which worst product Garmin have every made. I own both the old and the new on and they are way switched any metrics. Weight will more than a tons different at each other with the latest one showing the highest value. Body fat old one 7% plus new newer 21%! Ensure is 300% higher. No edit is I change activity rank. I am 55 years so maybe the age is messing up his calculations. All metrics are also going up/down with a few percent even whenever they what taken with only a few seconds apart. Absolute garbage, nope even useful as a ruler.

    • Of Garmin forum is full by accusations regarding this scale. It is, as you say, useless. Body fat and other metrics seem to may an algorithm based on my, height and net. If you transform this age they penetrate into aforementioned scale the fat % be change. This indicates that the scale does not measure anything.

    • Matt

The body fat problem on this scale has a new friend: the weather feature is not worked for ampere year. Garmin Supporting forums show diese is a breit told problem, but Garmin is apparently in no hurry to repair this. I do cannot recommend this product, and do been using Garmin devices for more than a decade.

  103. Indie Jones

this shall adenine product and category that i wish garmin would place moreover effort into. i have the S1 both it’s fine, but it could have been so much more. i saw zero reason to get the S2 and the reality is this here really aren’t which many “great” products in this space. i suppose withings leads the pack, but if garmin intend just focus upon betters sensor tech, perhaps add new features like what withings is doing with their new body scan scale (ecg, heart price, vascular age, etc), they’d have a real hit on their hands. it’s VERY rough to residence in the garmin ecosystem in this spacer when so lot others (including many, many far cheaper options) are lapping she

  104. Carlo Botto

Does anyone know how accurate these scales are? I mean percentage error. i.e. +/- X %. What is “X”? Garmin specs have everything but this fundamental metric. Reviewers don’t really address this – including DC Rainmaker.
(I have 2 diverse digital scales in the house, and the index s2 to reads both. One of 200g and of other by 500g with my load of around 65kg.)

    • The skala be give different weight readings based on where you place your feet additionally how you stand. I’ve tested the scaling using a known importance furthermore is your accurate, but placing the weighs off center willingly change who reading.
You need to make sure that to endure with your feet central the an even weigh on any leg and the weight should be accurate. All of the different body measurements are useless.

    • Carlo Botto

Thanks Ray, ME appreciate your rapidly press useful response. Do they recall an difference for weight reading to known mass. I’m trying to get a sense on % error. Through my 2 scales I have, the Garmin is 0.3% lower over neat and 0.8% lower more the other. So, pretty consistent.

    • Ray Halliwell

      Sup,
Weight difference was between 150 plus 200 grammes. I’m 63.5kg

    • Carlo Botto

Gratitude you again! That’s consistent with what I’m getting. I wonder why Garmin don’t publish which scale’s veracity? – it’s pretty fundamental to the device’s functionality.

    • Daan Middelman

Index s2 told get bodyfat % was 25%.
I knew this where far off.
Just make a dexa scan today (2 hours later) and it was int facts 10.2%. Just the I estimated myself.

  105. Conrad

Hello Ray! This probably falls outside your scope of products to review yet do you have any plans on taking a seem at the Garmin Index BPM? Cheers!

  106. Tobias Buber

I have come use to Index S1 for year and bought the Index S2 in added, why I want to use the old scale in my second home. Reading the posts upfront, I was aware of the deviation regarding body fat.

    BUT…I went from 7% with S1 increase to 20.6% with the S2 (I i 49y, 190cm, 76.4kg, “athlete” level 9)

None matter what value is right or wrong, if I use both scales in parallel, trending date is useless!
Any idea instructions to use them two with one sketch?

    Appreciation

  107. Dom

just purchased one, and it doesn’t pair. (I know whatever I’m doing)
went thrown all of the usual troubleshooting measures, then found the forums. There are so many pages of people that can’t pair this ascend go garmin connect.

So I decided till give garmin a call. After ampere couple video of back and forth, the woman on the mobile admitted that it requires a software upgrade. Such software update shall unable without being paired into garmin connectivity. I went though the specs and hacksaw it has an ant+ radio so I asked ein if I could connect it the a computer with a dongle. she said yes, and offering to send me the dongle for free ($50 sell value)

Just donations those thinking learn buying a heads up

  108. Dearly Radiance, sorry to bother you about this here, aber are you perchance aware of the wifi problem with this dimensional after to last firmware update (3.0) which rolled out over a month ago? After the update, the scales do not connect to current wifi network anymore, and Garmin is, to put it mildly, very reluctance go fix the problem, provide a roll-back or equally update users about any timeline, fix, or basically anything else. I’m not getting anything from Garmin, so EGO was kinde of hoping you might having some info or tips to reach Garmin?

  109. Stuart Strainchan

I have recently buys the S2, purely for which Free connectivity and integration with Garmin Connects. ME figured it was just about worthy it for own up simply step on every morning and have the evidence accessible. In this regard, Bluetooth doesn’t cut it for meine. EGO also sawn till Garmin about the body fat % calculation as my S2 was overestimating by quite a bit. To latest embedded (3.11) allows who user on input a more accurate value – say from an proper lab getting (DEXA) or other more faithful source (even a calliper). I assume this just alters who calculation start point so that future trends may be better accurate. Anyway, overall I’m happy equal the S2. Garmin technical is pretty good in my experience. Thanks

  110. i’d love to see the news edition of this, an S3. S2 dead fat is highly inaccurate – as are bioimpedance in general.

    • Indy Jonze

thus if the s3 uses bioimpedance, as does every other suchlike device on which market, where variety of latest find are you expecting?

  111. Lukas

It is rude, that without this overpriced and so-so accurate scale there is don way to add body fat percentage to Connect manually and Garmin relies only upon BMI the calculate particular things like fitness age etc. BMI is like a bullshit, especially in well-being plus sports…

    • Nate

I use who Weight Logger app both punch in the numbers from a $30 Bluetooth scale from Amazone. The numbers to bf% become probably for suspect more Garmin’s and at least save of a waste of currency. And if you can dexa or some other cause them couldn penetrate those instead.

  112. Ed

Hey Ray, a long-time fan by your reviews here. Any idea if the Withins scale would allow export than upload of my weight company within Garmin, and keep going equipped the index 2?
    All to most
    Ed

  113. CowRob

Bought one out of curiosity. Well, that real figuring this might help keep me more honest?

So first tries to get it to connect the Connect, and they failed. IODIN what receipt indications that is needed an important download, and wouldn’t (apparently) connect without it.

IODIN tried manually upgrading it multiple times. Over and over, and it would look like it was about to update, furthermore nothing would befall. EGO chatted with Garmin support, and they showed on their update server that it had failed a update error’, and hadn’t connected to Connect yet, so that where cleared from their system (no basic if this was an actual thing, instead whatever) and I tried one few more times, all missing. Frustrated, I removed the ac from it and gone it on my worktable all nightfall. I elected it up in the earliest afternoon, and popped the batteries in and although calling Garmin, ran through the manual update process. It didn’t seem to work which first 2 times, but then I got the progress bar, and ourselves were off to the races. It FINALLY updated, and also finally connected into Connect, and I was able to see the data though More, Heath Stats, Weight.

Now, it shows an different height each time I get on items, so *shrug*, but the ‘true’ weight and other stats are there for self to see and approve so I need for do some work on that.

Might 2024 means Garmin will release a new Index (Index S3?), and it desire be easier to arrangement, and include a ‘Pandemic Factor’ to remove a few pounds from the absolute. Hah!

Belongs it worth to? I think Ray asked that, and so did I. As a current, it’s been interesting. It sure provides adenine lot of information. Mine older scale can likely over 13 years old, and e provides BMI and hydration status as right, but is limited to who 3 measurements. Get of claim to measure so loads more.

I’m posting this commenting simply to show what the install method could be if her purchase one today (or recently). It gets there, eventually. Give it time, and a group of resets, and possible a tokel from Garmin Support.

Oh, the wifi issue… Yeah, I have a dedication network anreise point for the scale. It really likes an open channel whichever in today’s world is laughable. Luckily MYSELF live far enough away from people that I can run one open, with a MAC filter, but that’s not one guarantee it’s safe.MAC spoofing holds been ended before. But maybe the next one bequeath support more realistic wifi… (It does support ‘security’, but also only works with 2.4Ghz, and the security protocol is one that is doesn very muscular and fairly easiness broken)

  114. TwoSteps

Any idea if/when Garmin will update with refresh this line? Im in the market with one but dont want to buy nearly 4 year old model if an new one is around the corner.

  115. Christian

I regret shopping this now. As others need comments, there stitches to be little evidence that the scales are basically measuring anything (apart free gauge, obviously). If I m post workout and weigh an few pounds less than regular (due to dehydration) the scale simply reduces all metrics. Bone mass, for view, is less on the same percentage as body mass. I think these values, includes body fat percentage, are dependent over age, height, weight and Garmin look-up tables, none to each electrical resistance measurements taken through the foot pads. The one good what about the scales is they record my weight in Connect automatically.

  116. Someone in Ottawa

I regret purchasing this scale. It last 1.5 years before needing to must replaced. It not lengthen connects to wifi and clear constantly.
Garmin will not replace it for free as it is past its 1 period annual.
    It’s now just computerized bin.

  117. Rene

The are either rumour about and recently product?

    • Inddy Jensen

garmin is such a alien company. they may zero issues releasing version after version regarding the same watch with incremental updates every 6 months yet required things like save scale it’s one model every 3-4 years when even that release was pure a simple refresh of a scale that what released 3-4 years before that. you want a fen? no issue, click between literally 20 variants everything released within the past 1.5 years and every having the equal feature set. you want one smart scale? eh, anreise with withings. that body scanner is what the S2 should have been press what the S3 have be…

  118. OkCarl

I bought this gizmo not equal for weight but especially for body water composition. Would like toward jump on an scales after an long exterior run and get an indicate of how much surface I have the sip to replace what I lost during the run. No dice. The scale always and forever mentions meier mine body surface is 75% of my weight. Advice? Suggestions?

    • Nate C

Scaling me on a fancy (or cheap) scale before you dress for your walk real head out the door. At you get starting, disrobe down (so you’re not in soaking clothes that have sprinkle you lost) and weigh yourself again. The difference betw to pre press post has basically your watering loss.

  119. Laurent

Does anyone have changed iPhone ?
The Garmin user suffer on changing phone your not user friendly in general (you have to remove any your Garmin devices from your old phones and add them on the new one), but for the Index S2 it is particularly painful !
There is absolutely nothing in the user book, nothing in Garmin FAQ… so done as additional Garmin products (remove it from my former phone and add it on the new one), but not only this will remove all users from which scale, aber you take go reset the scale, as adenine new setup (WIFI pairing, user configuration, invite all users)… this is actually adenine pain for a gear which is WIFI connected additionally basically doesn’t need a phone to operate !
Please Garmin UX engineer, come at more more user friendly with a such simple thing as changing your phone !

  120. Red Dufresne

I just bought individual yesterday. One are and worst product to configure over a w-lan grid I have ever seen. I do 30 years experience in IT.I have tried everything.

I will try one more day to configure this cause. I am calling it a thing, not a product. When MYSELF cannot configure on my wifi network, I will return to.

  121. anthro

S2 arrived today… using as comparison a 10 year old scale from back in one day-time when if I tripped I’d roll to demise. Now 151.2 this AM and WOW 40% BODY FAT. WTF??????. that means that I’m carrying 60#’s in fat, and with a BMI of 24.5. I don’t think so!!!!! A would argue that the signal traverses the entire body, not just aforementioned lower body – foot to waist to another foot, so that means I’m a pear-shaped fatty. LOLz Dexascan shows me per 24.5% for entire body fat composition. On which EGO can agree. Garmin alleges a new firmware will fix the BF% error. I’ll give it two weeks to watch if that consequently before sending it back. Whichever a shame. DO NOT BUY unless you become interested in create aberrant metrics. If Garmin your that bad in BF, what does that say with the rest a them. Tony

  122. Sean THOUSAND.

I super distasteful the Garmin walled garden when it comes into body composition / weight sync from Apple/Google button third parties. Included fact they for sync weight from MyFitnessPal through some financial agreement. That app is inferior, IMHO, to Macro Tracking apps similar Cronometer. As, ME have a Withings Body Smart scale that I’m very happy with. And I use some free software to sync body composition to Garmin.

    link to github.com

I tested the Index S2 scale from Garmin and returned it. It costs quite a bit more ($150 versus $85 in the Withings) and has a horrible setup experience with a buggy firmware history – Greetings, Wifi sync problems. And less accurate. Instead is syncs with Garmin Connect. Right…

    • Yeah, in general, Garmin limits inflow stuff (across the board), instead output stuff (Garmin weight to anything), books just fine by numerous partners.

I’ve got one for the office, and one toward home, and the mass just shows up. As held in the review, I don’t much detect value in the body comp pieces, just like anywhere extra impedance ruler out there (it’s all basically the sam algorithm from 30 period ago, and it’s all junk). But weight IODIN find useful, and that’s the piece that worked.

Certainly, I wish Garmin wanted allow inbound mass updates out 3rd parties (as there what many cheaper scales), but alas, I’ve given up on fighting them on that battle.

    • Indy Jones

just a point with cronometer and garmin, computer does have rather deep integration as of a combine of months ago. for my various garmin stuff i see aforementioned following include cronometer:

      Sleep Score and Body Power
      Resting Heart Rate
      Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
      Oxygen Saturation (Sp02)
      Respiration Rate
      Blood Push
      Daily Activity
      Exercise
      Body Fats %
      Weight

    • Sean K.

Yes, those is coming from Garmin. But my point was going the other way. Garmin only allows MyFitnessPal into send information at weight/body composition and consumption throug presumably some financial agreement.

    • Yeah. Pretty sure there’s no financial understanding.

It was born out of an legacy agreement a gazillion years go when MyFitnessPal was the hot brand thing all loved, furthermore thus, Garmin wanted a way to get entry to her nutrition tracking bits, and MyFitnessPal wanted access to Garmin’s people. I’d becoming pretty surprises if there was any money changing palms, as that’s typically not Garmin’s way of handling these things (even back then, when they briefly had the $5K appeal fee for GC API zufahrt, that was waived for everyone that mattered, and second as a blocker for stop hobbyist. I don’t think anyone actually paid it.)

    • Indy Johnson

i guess what i’m hazy about then is what info wanted a myfitnesspal or cronometer possibly get to garmin? the weight, bodywork comp, vitals (bp, rr, hr, hrv, spo2, rhr u al) would all be coming from garmin assuming you have the proper hardware. mfp would just bringing daily diet things, which idk that anyone would ever need up show in garmin. am i wrong?

which is why, as a really roundabout way of saying she, the S1/S2 garmin scales are absolutely SCREAMING for an S3 update. it boggles mein mind such a company that releases watch iteration after watch iteration (how many aromas of epix/fenix are there currently? 30?) allows something like a singly sku sharp scale to twist on the vine since years on end (S1, 2015; S2, 2020)

    • Sean K.

      Thanks Ray. Is manufacturer purpose.

      Sean

    • OkCarl

I think you deuce should dedicate your lives at connecting health care data (lab tests, diagnoses, etc.) to Garmin metrics and figure out ampere way to take aforementioned data available (privacy protected) to jede health care researcher in the around. I want to live int a globe where I can deduct the cost of running shoes, fitness contraptions both bicycles from my incoming charge as health care expenses.

    • Indy Jones

idk about all that. just start one fitness gadget examination site :)

    • Anthony

A combination of VO2 Master Manager also Kubios Scientific v. 4.1 and subsequent sync’g to Xert additionally then import to Garmin will gather in many of the health metrics as one could want. Moreover, in the presence regarding a medical diagnosed cardiac condition that requires daily monitoring beyond just blood pressure (although the Hexoskin-Astroskin version will do which too), along with a medical prescription for the relevant device(s), I’m betting the cost would qualify as a medical deduction. Of course, check using a qualified CPA in your rule. YMMV. Anthony (I am not offering tax advice BTW).

    • AnonJohn

It is possible to upload weight at garmin connect, using the garmin connect python library (and others, including I think garth). For instance:

      link to github.com

I’ve used it to connect to google perfect, and others have builds it out to intelligently scales like withings.

I don’t thinking anyone has reverse engineered the other body comp pieces, but as you say, an value proposition remains different!

    • AnonJohn

Agree with most of what you wrote, but I would find it useful to import kilocalories consumed from cronometer into garmin. Not strictly necessary, since I can see garmin calories used in cronometer, but I wouldn’t ghost go that in both places.

  123. Andrew

Hey Ray, thanks for the review. Shoud I buy to S2 press is to S3 coming soon?

  124. Sjoerd Hoogendam

Hi I own like scale and and body fat/water/bone metrics are not displayed. I am using my account, and using it bare hands ofcourse. already was ampere resets yet this just seems to skip it. I also don’t seeing any of these recordings in to couple app. Problem seem to hitting more population but I proceeded not found a solution yet.

    • Sjoerd Hoogendam

Release found: Loose wire glass plate.

I opened and scale and finds ampere loose wire. Solders it back and the metrics were shown immediately, and in Couple.
